Jim Carrey has a history of avoiding sequels, which is why follow-ups to The Mask, Dumb and Dumber and Bruce Almighty have moved forward without him (although Carrey did return for Ace Ventura: Pet Detective in 1994).

It’s fair to say Jim Carrey has had a hard time finding the right movie over recent years. Mr. Popper’s Penguins may have been a financial success worldwide ($187m) but it’s a far cry from the $500 million made by Bruce Almighty in 2003, so it’s not really surprising to hear Carrey may be returning for an Almighty sequel.

According to Variety, Universal has hired Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel (Hot Tub Time Machine, Yes Men) to write the script for Bruce Almighty 2, which is being developed with Jim Carrey in mind. The original, which also starred Morgan Freeman, Jennifer Aniston and Steve Carell, followed a guy who complains about God too often and is given almighty powers to teach him how difficult it is to run the world.

Carrey wasn’t interested in playing Bruce Nolan for a second time so Universal made Evan Almighty in 2007 with Carell’s character, but it ended up costing twice as much as Bruce Almighty and only made $175 million worldwide. Tom Shadyac directed both movies but he hasn’t directed a studio movie since Evan, so no word on whether he’ll be returning.

This isn’t the first sequel to an old hit Carrey is considering. Last October we heard Peter and Bobby Farrelly were moving ahead with a sequel to Dumb and Dumber which would require the involvement of Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels. Nothing much has been heard since.

It’s been a long time coming but after more than a decade, Peter and Bobby Farrelly are moving ahead with a sequel to the original 1994 hit comedy Dumb and Dumber. Deadline reports that the duo just wrapped their latest flick, The Three Stooges, and plan on bringing back Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels to hopefully direct the sequel next.

Deadline also mentions that writers Sean Anders and John Morris have been hired to pen the script so things are really moving forward this time. Thing is they have to get Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, without them there is no movie. With the exception of Ace Ventura, Jim Carrey has never been one for sequels but considering the downward spiral he’s been in, I’d wager that he might be down for this sequel. With Jeff Daniels there should be no problems but in the end it will obviously come down the script, if they like it, they’ll do it. Another problem could be the age of the leading stars; in 1994 Jeff Daniels was 39 while Jim Carrey was 32. Now they are 56 and 49 respectively.

Ultimately there’s a very strong driving force behind this sequel, you see the original film made $247.2 million on a $17 million budget. Yes, I know they already made a sequel/prequel in 2003 titled Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd with a different cast. That movie is best forgotten.

So who’s looking forward to more Dumb and Dumber? Will the age of the characters be a problem or can you look past that?

In the past we’ve had short pieces of footage but now we finally have a trailer for Robert Zemeckis’ A Christmas Carol. Ebenezer Scrooge begins Christmas being a bit of a bastard to his faithful clerk and his cheery nephew. But when the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come take him on an eye-opening journey revealing truths Old Scrooge is reluctant to face, he must open his heart to undo years of ill will before it’s too late.

The computer wizardry looks great, especially at the end when we get a close up shot of Scrooge. It’s a big improvement from The Polar Express.

As well as Jim Carrey the cast includes Colin Firth, Robin Wright Penn and Bob Hoskins, and will be released on November 6th.

Yahoo! were given the first poster for Robert Zemeckis’ 3D take on A Christmas Carol. Jim Carrey plays not only Ebenezer Scrooge, but also the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present and the Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come.  Colin Firth plays Fred and Gary Oldman plays Bob Cratchit.

Despite being a Christmas film, Disney have decided to release it at the beginning of November.

Robert Zemeckis directed Beowulf and The Polar Express so it’s no surprise that the film was shot entirely in performance capture. As well as Scrooge, Carrey will be playing the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present and the Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come.

A Christmas Carol will be released in November 2009.

Disney held a presentation at the Kodak Theatre earlier today in Hollywood and they revealed new information about their future projects, many of which involve Johnny Depp.

The first bit of news is that Depp will be playing The Madd Hatter in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. There have been rumors that he would play the part in recent weeks and now it is official. Perfect casting right there.

The second bit of Depp news is that he has been cast in the upcoming Jerry Bruckheimer produced adaptation of The Lone Ranger, which follows a masked Texas Ranger in the Old West who rights injustices with the aid of his native American assistant, Tonto, who Depp will be playing. The script is currently being written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, who wrote the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy.

This leads me nicely onto the news that Depp will be back as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean 4. My guess is that the story will involve the Fountain of Youth which was hinted at towards the end of At World’s End. I just hope they get Geoffrey Rush back as Barbossa, as his character was a personal favourite and to see him on the big screen again would be a treat.
