IGN teamed up with Prince of Persia game creator Jordan Mechner and together they dissect the new trailer for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, revealing some behind the scene info in the process. They rewind, pause, and slow-mo the trailer down to give us a better look at some of the stuff we have probably missed. They focus a lot of the dagger, and talk about what Jerry Bruckheimer and director Mike Newell have added to the movie which wasn’t in any of the games.

Less than 24 hours ago we got our first look at a trailer for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, and now we have another one. This one is an international trailer, although it doesn’t specify where, so lets just assume it’s for Ireland. It shows lots of new footage and is set up completely different to the first trailer. I prefer the trailer we got yesterday as it was a bit more epic, but this one is still cool.

The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsley and will be released next May.

The trailer for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was broadcast on UK TV earlier today and had found it’s way onto YouTube in sub-par quality. IGN were originally going to officially release the trailer at 7pm PST, however as it was already online they decided to put it out there early in HD, and I’m glad they did. It’s quite good.

I didn’t really know what to expect from this. Jerry Bruckheimer wanted to create a new franchise after Pirates of the Caribbean, and from the trailer it looks like Persia is going to be huge. It’s a special effects heavy blockbuster, with two good looking leads and lots of action. Who won’t be seeing this?

How John August pitched Prince of Persia

John August, writer of The Nines and Corpse Bride, has a blog which he updates now and again with interesting stuff about screenwriting and the movie industry in general. Today he updated it with a post which describes how he and Jodran Mechner (writer, game designer) pitched the Prince of Persia movie to studios. In order to sell their idea to the studio executives they used footage from the actual game, which he says isn’t common, but it worked.

Most movie pitches don’t involve video, but with PoP, most of the studio executives weren’t familiar with the game at all, so it became an important way to introduce them to both the franchise and the world. As Jordan notes in his post, this trailer doesn’t really tell the story of the movie, but it does give a sense of the characters and style: the dashing prince’s acrobatics, the devoted priestess/princess, the dagger with its time-reversing slickness.
Jordan and I pitched seven studios over two days. Each time, the presentation was pretty much identical.
1. Introductions. Apologies for keeping us waiting. (1 minute)
2. John hyping Jordan’s prestigious videogame background. (1:00)
3. Play the video. (2:10)
4. Jordan describes the world of the Persian empire, using artwork. (:30)
5. John pitches Prince Dastan, using artwork of him. (:30)
6. John and Jordan alternate pitching story, introducing character/prop artwork as new things come up. (6:00)
7. Questions about story, tone and scale. “Somewhere between Pirates and Raiders. It’s not Lawrence of Arabia.”(3:00)
8. Promises that they’ll follow up. (1:00)
Altogether, we could get through the pitch in less than 20 minutes. Disney liked it, and sent us to Jerry Bruckheimer’s company, who bought it from Jordan. The film comes out next May.

August says that we should be getting a trailer for the film shortly, and there have been hints we could see one next month.

Pirates of the Caribbean 4 is currently being written!

The last thing we heard on Pirates of the Caribbean 4 was that director of the trilogy, Gore Verbinski, had decided to direct Bioshock instead of returning for a fourth outing (which was understandable). Now producer Jerry Bruckheimer has spoken to Coming Soon and revealed that writers Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot are working on the script “as we speak”.

Bruckheimer told us that for Disney, the priority is most definitely “Pirates.” “It’s a great franchise for them and for us, too,” he said. “A beloved character and Johnny’s really excited about coming back to Captain Jack. He certainly is interested in Tonto, but Disney’s priority is to get ‘Pirates’ made first. You never know what’s going to happen, but they would like it.”
Bruckheimer shared that the original writers, Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot, were “writing ‘Pirates’ as we speak,” and he said it was “funny” and a “whole new way of going” although he wouldn’t share more than that.
Since Gore Verbinski recently announced that he may not direct a movie based on the video game BioShock, we asked Bruckheimer if there was a chance he might return for a fourth movie. “You never know,” he admitted. “He created the franchise so we’d love to have him back, but it’s kind of up to him.”

The Pirates trilogy has made Disney billions so it makes sense to move forward with the next one as they are guaranteed a huge return. Gore Verbinski recently cast doubt as to whether he will actually end up directing Bioshock, which I suppose increases his chances of returning if he isn’t tired of the franchise.

Seanbajuice directed us to our first look at Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. In the video below you will see producer Jerry Bruckheimer talking about the actors (Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsley), the characters and story. However the best bits are when we are shown snippets of footage throughout interview. Watch below!

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time still has another year to go before it is released, so I doubt we will be getting much over the next few months, unless they plan on releasing a teaser during this summer’s movie season.

Gore Verbinski will not be directing Pirates of the Caribbean 4

Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy director Gore Verbinski has decided not to get back into the directors chair for Pirates of the Caribbean 4 according to Variety.

Verbinski has informed Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer that he will not helm a fourth installment that’s expected to set sail in 2010 with Johnny Depp back as Captain Jack Sparrow.
Sequel is in development but not yet greenlit. It’s unknown how Verbinski’s ankling will affect the pic’s schedule.
“I had a fantastic time bringing ‘Pirates’ to life, and I am eternally grateful to Jerry, Johnny and the rest of the creative and production team,” Verbinski said. “I’m looking forward to all of us crossing paths again in the future.”

This is understandable considering Gore has spent 6 years of his life surrounded by pirates. While the exotic filming locations will no doubt have been tempting, most directors prefer to use their creative talents on different things. Variety say that Gore will instead be focusing on the movie adaptation of Bioshock, which he has been attached to direct since May last year. Filming on that is expected to begin sometime in 2010, so Gore will not be escaping the sea entirely, as Bioshock mostly takes place under it (or in it if you want to be technical).

This obviously means Disney will be searching for a new director for Pirates 4, which won’t necessarily be a bad thing depending on who they get. Someone else guiding Captain Jack Sparrow on another adventure will be interesting, and some fans of the trilogy may welcome it. Screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio will be back to write the script, so we shouldn’t expect anything too drastically different from what we saw in the trilogy.

G-Force Guinea Pigs

USA Today got our first look at some highly trained guinea pigs from Jerry Bruckheimer’s G-Force, which features the vocal talents of Bill Nighy, Will Arnett, Zach Galifianakis, Nicolas Cage, Sam Rockwell, Jon Favreau, Penelope Cruz, Steve Buscemi and Tracy Morgan.

The film is about the latest evolution of a covert government program to train animals to work in espionage. Armed with the latest high-tech spy equipment, these highly trained guinea pigs discover that the fate of the world is in their paws. Tapped for the G-Force are guinea pigs Darwin (Rockwell), the squad leader determined to succeed at all costs; Blaster (Morgan), an outrageous weapons expert with tons of attitude and a love for all things extreme; and Juarez (Cruz), a sexy martial arts pro; plus the literal fly-on-the-wall reconnaissance expert, Mooch, and a star-nosed mole, Speckles (Cage), the computer and information specialist.

Pirates of the Caribbean 4 in 3D?

An article over at Variety suggests that we could see Pirates of the Caribbean 4 in 3D.

1) Disney is heavily invested in 3-D, including live-action. 2) Gore Verbinski and Johnny Depp are making an animated 3-D movie together, Rango. and 3) Jerry Bruckheimer is making G Force in 3-D.
Disney, Bruckheimer, Verbinski, Depp… Nobody at Disney is talking, but we wouldn’t be surprised to hear a P4 3-D announcement one of these days.

The suggestion seems logical. If the main creative team and Disney are going 3D crazy with other movies, why not Pirates? Imagine seeing the maelstrom ship battle from At World’s End in 3D…epic!

Pirates of the Caribbean 4 In 2012

Back in September is was announced that Johnny Depp would be returning as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean 4, however nothing else was revealed. Now producer Jerry Bruckheimer has given us a small update on the status of the film, along with how National Treasure 3 is progressing.

As far as approaching the sequels for “National Treasure” and “Pirates of the Caribbean,” Bruckheimer says that both are having scripts written. “We’ve sat with the writers and we’re working up the story and plotlines right now. They’re in the process of finishing ‘The Lone Ranger’ so they’re working on both of those simultaneously, same set of writers, Elliot and Rossio, who did all three ‘Pirates’ and worked on ‘National Treasure (2)’”
“I think they’re pushing towards 2012,” Bruckheimer told us about the possible release date for this fourth “Pirates” movie. “Hopefully we can make it we’ll see.”

2012 is a heck of a long time to wait. They could be waiting for Gore Verbinski to finish work on Bioshock and Rango. If they are going to have the same writers they may as well have the same director too.
