SuperHeroHype! recently spotted a promo poster for The Avengers at the Licensing International Expo in Las Vegas. The poster is only a drawing, but it does give us a preview of the team, and we get our first look at Jeremy Renner in his Hawkeye costume.

The Avengers, directed by Joss Whedon, will star Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Mark Ruffalo (The Hulk), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chris Evans (Captain America), Clark Gregg (Agent Coulson), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) and will be released May 4th, 2012.

If Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger do well at the box office this summer then sequels will obviously be forthcoming. Last week screenwriters Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus spoke about potentially setting the Captain America sequel in modern times, and in the upcoming summer issue of Disney twenty-three magazine (via IGN) Marvel Studios producer Kevin Feige confirmed:

“Thor will go off into a new adventure and Captain America will continue to explore the modern world in another film of his own.”

Marvel is also keen on expanding the universe further, and following Iron Man 2 there was talk of a Black Widow spin-off with Scarlett Johansson. Now Feige says he wants to see a Hawkeye movie, persumably with Jeremy Renner (although you know what Marvel are like with re-casting) and a S.H.I.E.L.D spin-off.

“We hope that holds true for the characters appearing in that film — Black Widow, Hawkeye, and the spy organization, S.H.I.E.L.D. — all of whom are more than worthy and capable of carrying their own films. And, we’ve got a lot of other characters we’re prepping and getting ready for film debuts: the world of martial arts, these great cosmic space fantasies, Dr. Strange, and the magic side of the Marvel Universe. There are many, many stories to be mined.”

Over the past year writers have been hired for Black Panther, Iron Fist and Dr. Strange movies, so it’ll just be a case of waiting to see if any of them leave development hell. Marvel were on the verge of shooting Runaways with director Peter Sollett (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist), but they put the project on hold because they were already too busy with the current line-up. Marvel managed to turn a second-tier comic book character such as Iron Man into a box office giant, but third and fourth-tier characters may not achieve the same success.

We’ve seen with Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, and Iron Man 2 that Marvel has a habit of cross-overs as they lead up to The Avengers in 2012. Thor’s hammer and Nick Fury were seen in the Iron Man sequel, but Samuel L. Jackson confirmed earlier this year that he would not be appearing alongside Chris Hemsworth next May (he will however be in Captain America).

So which character will pop up in Thor? Tony Stark? Black Widow?

According to The Wrap, it’s Hawkeye.

Jeremy Renner will first appear as Hawkeye in a cameo in the Kenneth Branagh-directed “Thor,” TheWrap has learned.

…an individual who has seen an early cut of “Thor” confirmed to TheWrap that Renner’s Hawkeye appears in the film, although the person declined to elaborate on the context of the character’s appearance or when it will occur. They did, however, confirm Jackson’s earlier statements that Nick Fury does not appear in “Thor.”

Cameo’s never remain secret these days, but I guess this one could have been expected. Hawkeye can’t appear in Captain America because it is set in 1940, so Thor is the only movie Marvel could slot him in before The Avengers in 2012.

In September Renner said his costume will be a “little more reality-based” instead of being “a big purple, comics sort of thing”. If Hawkeye is in his costume in Thor it means fans will only have to wait until May to see their first look at Renner with his bow and arrows.

I think it’s expected by now that whenever new comic-book characters are introduced onto the big screen their costumes may be altered slightly. The costumes for Thor and Captain America look pretty close to the comics, but in the case of Hawkeye a fully purple costume may need a few changes.

Jeremy Renner, who will be playing Hawkeye in The Avengers, recently spoke to MTV and discussed his costume:

“I think it’s going to be a little more reality-based,” said Renner. “You can kind of tell with Scarlett [Johansson]‘s character [in 'Iron Man 2'], it’s going to be more of a uniform . . . and not a big purple, comics sort of thing.”

According to Renner, it’s that decision to stray from the classic look that’s helped the Marvel movies connect with mainstream audiences.

“That’s why I think it’s more palatable to audiences — there’s almost a sense of reality to these superheroes,” he explained. “That’s what makes it interesting to me, anyway.”

In the comics Clint Barton was orphaned at a young age and joined the circus where he was trained as an acrobat and archer. Inspired by the exploits of the Avengers he became Hawkeye, and at one point the archer enjoyed a successful stint as the leader of the West Coast Avengers. The Avengers has a huge number of characters involved so we may not get the chance to see the characters back-story in full, but i’m sure director Joss Whedon and Renner will do Hawkeye justice.

Last year during awards season when The Hurt Locker and Jeremy Renner were getting a lot of buzz the actor revealed that Marvel had approached him to play Hawkeye in The Avengers. In later interviews the actor said that nothing was official as they still needed a director (Marvel have since hired Joss Whedon), however according to Heat Vision Renner and Marvel are now in the final stages of negotiations for him to join the superhero movie event of 2012.

In the comics Clint Barton was orphaned at a young age and joined the circus where he was trained as an acrobat and archer. Inspired by the exploits of the Avengers he became Hawkeye, and at one point the hot-headed archer enjoyed a successful stint as the leader of the West Coast Avengers.

In December Renner spoke about what Marvel had planned for the character, and why he was interested in playing him:

“They sold me on the idea, too, because I love the idea that Hawkeye’s really not a superhero,” Jeremy told us. “He’s just a man with a high skill set, so I can relate to (that). The Marvel guys are great for how they made Iron Man to be, ‘Oh, that’s actually plausible’ so I bought it and I love that. They’re really, really smart guys and I’d love to work for ‘em, and we’ll see if it works out.”

When we asked him if he’s started reading up on his Hawkeye comic book history just in case he gets the role, he gave us a possible hint of what the character might look like in the movie compared to the comics: “Yeah, but it’s going to be modernized, it’s not going to be the guy with the big purple (mask), it’s not going to be a guy in tights. It’s going to be a guy in sunglasses and a vest. He’s going to be more modernized and I’m gonna say, ‘A cooler-looking version’ and not the big weird costume he had on. I don’t think they’re going that route.”

The Avengers will begin filming in January/February with Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man/Tony Stark, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Don Cheadle as War Machine. No word on Edward Norton returning as The Hulk, but we’ll find out one way or another in time.

Last month The Hurt Locker actor Jeremy Renner spoke quite openly about possibly playing Hawkeye in The Avengers, and maybe Thor. The internet seemed pretty welcoming of this casting as many thought he would be perfect for the role, however he was recently interviewed by Movieline and he revealed that it was blown a little out of proportion, and it was only an idea Marvel had.

That was just one of those things that got blown way out of proportion. It was an idea. Those Marvel guys, I’m a big fan of them. They’re so smart about how they want to do these things — they have Captain America, and Thor coming around, Iron Man 2, and then I happen to know Zak Penn, who’s writing The Avengers. So they thought Hawkeye is an interesting role, and asked me if I knew anything about him. I said no, so they gave me their sort of spiel on what he was, and I thought that it was kind of interesting. The only reason it came out this early, because Avengers is two years away, is that they’re thinking OK, we may throw him in Thor, we may not, as a cameo. You know what I mean? So there’s truth that we talked about it, but there’s no truth to me doing it.

Thor begins filming next month so there is still time for them to hire Renner as Hawkeye for a cameo appearance. There is still over 2 years before we see The Avengers on screen so anything could happen between then and now. I hope they cast Renner though, as he’d make a great Hawkeye.

Last week Empire spoke to The Hurt Locker actor Jeremy Renner and he revealed that he had been talking with Marvel about playing Hawkeye in The Avengers, and possibly Thor. I found him talking about this quite surprising, as actors rarely talk about things like this as studios often ask actors not to reveal such details, and Marvel haven’t even said anything about Hawkeye yet so he’s kinda let the cat out of the bag.

Anyhow, SHH caught up with the actor at the Independent Film Gotham Awards recently and he revealed even more details.

“I haven’t heard anything since I talked to them three weeks ago,” he admitted. “The last I knew is that they still have to find their director for ‘The Avengers,’ that’s where he’s really going to show up. They were just talking, ‘Like maybe we should consider maybe hiring Hawkeye now’ but there’s no director on ‘Avengers’ so they don’t really want to force-feed the director, ‘Here’s the whole cast.’ It’s a big role so they didn’t want to do that to the director, so I think they might wait. I know they’re interested, I’m interested, so we’ll see if it works out.”

Jeremy Renner, who played Sgt. William James in The Hurt Locker earlier this year, may be in talks with Marvel to play Hawkeye. The Playlist have a quote from the actor which appeared in the latest issue of Empire magazine:

Renner says he and Marvel have been in discussions about playing the archer character Hawkeye that will make appearances in a least two upcoming Marvel pictures, including a cameo in “Thor” and then a role in “The Avengers” supergroup.

“Hawkeye could be interesting. They’re going to send me some stuff on it, see what it is. But I think they’re pretty awesome, trying to make superhero movies almost plausible and not just some fantasy thing.”

Jeremy Renner would be a great choice for Hawkeye. In the comics Hawkeye joined the Avengers by breaking into their Headquarters. Here’s a bit more info on the character:

There, he was trained as an acrobat and archer, although he later received a rude awakening when he discovered that his carnival mentors were criminals.

His hot-headed attitude has gotten him into trouble from time to time, but his heart has always been in the right place, and for a time he enjoyed a successful stint as the leader of the West Coast Avengers.
