Film Music Reporter got their hands on the official track list for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. The score is composed by Hans Zimmer, who also provided music for the first film, and the track list drops us a few clues regarding the plot. Not much in the way of spoilers, though.

The soundtrack will be released on December 13, 2011, which is three days ahead of the movie which opens December 16.

Despite having a new director in Rob Marshall for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides composer Hans Zimmer is back once again to provide the music for the soundtrack.

Film Music Reporter got their hands on the score track list, which provides the titles of the 11 tracks from the original score by Hans Zimmer and Rodrigo y Gabriela, as well as four remixes by electronic music artists Photek, Static Avenger, Ki:Theory and Adam Freeland.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will include “zombies, cutthroats, mermaids and… Penelope Cruz” as Jack Sparrow and Barbossa sail to find the Fountain of Youth under the orders of King George II, only to find Blackbeard (Ian McShane) is after it too. Cruz plays Blackbeard’s daughter who is a woman from Sparrow’s past and he’s not sure if it’s love–or if she’s a ruthless con artist who’s just using him to find the Fountain of Youth.

As Christopher Nolan and Hans Zimmer have collaborated together on Batman Begin, The Dark Knight and Inception they are familiar with how each other works, which is why it was possible for Zimmer to start getting ideas for The Dark Knight Rises together back in October.

In a recent interview Zimmer spoke about his work on the score, and says it will be “extraordinarily epic” and “iconic”.

From MTV:

Asked how many notes of “The Dark Knight Rises” score he has down now, Zimmer laughed, “Ugh. No, no, no, no.” [Translation: I don't want to talk about that!]

“The one thing I can tell you is that it’s going to be a lot more epic. Extraordinarily epic.”

But what does that mean, Hans?!?

“I don’t know, it’s like, ‘What’s epic these days?’ I think there’s something in the core of the story that allows you to get the music much bigger and much more sort of, iconic,” he ventured.

I will gladly accept an “epic” and “iconic” Batman score from Hans Zimmer. On the previous films Zimmer has always collaborated with James Newton Howard (who is currently working on music for Green Lantern), so that pairing will probably happen again. The music for Batman Begin, The Dark Knight and Inception is amazing, so i’ll be looking forward to hearing the score for The Dark Knight Rises.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Nope. It is however, a quote taken out of context.

Last week there were reports that Christopher Nolan had brought his Inception and Batman composer Hans Zimmer onto the Superman reboot, but there appears to have been a misinterpretation somewhere as Zimmer recently denied his involvement when questioned on the matter.

From THR:

THR: The internet is buzzing with rumors that you’ve signed on to Zack Snyder’s Superman project. Any truth to that?

Hans Zimmer: You know, it’s like some dirty quote taken out of context. Let’s just be absolutely straight here: I have never in my life met Zack Snyder. I think I need to give him a ring.

I met Chris Nolan once and he knows Zack Snyder and therefore I’m doing Superman. You know that’s all it is.

THR: It may stem from the fact a lot of people would like to see you take that project. Based on the Batman films.

Zimmer: How can I say it: My heart belongs to Batman. I wouldn’t even know how to go and give voice to it. I haven’t thought about it.

THR: Not to mention following in the footsteps of John Williams.

Zimmer: Right! John Williams, the greatest living composer — full stop. And that happens to be one of his greatest themes. So no. And I’m not thinking of rewriting Beethoven’s ninth either. It just sounds like a thankless task, you know? So that’s unequivocally a no. I have never spoken with Zack Snyder.

And there we have it. I suppose it could happen now that the idea has been thrown out there, but with Zimmer describing it as a “thankless task” it’s unlikely.

Hans Zimmer has already confirmed he will be returning to compose the score for The Dark Knight Rises, and now Christopher Nolan has enlisted the composer to work on the Superman reboot also. When asked about the project Zimmer admitted that it would be a challenge given the past iconic themes from John Williams, but concluded “you are allowed to reinvent”.

From NBC San Diego’s Scott Huver (via AICN):

“It’s a hard one,” mused Zimmer, “but I followed one of the most iconic things on ‘Batman’ with Chris as well, and it’s the same thing. You are allowed to reinvent, but you have to try to be as good or at least as iconic and it has to resonate and it has to become a part of the zeitgeist. That’s the job. On ‘Gladiator’ I remember people always talking about ‘Spartacus’ and I kept telling them, ‘When you saw “Spartacus” and how it affected it you, that’s how I want a modern audience to be affected by what we do now.’ So I think ultimately you’re supposed to reinvent.”

Zimmer has tackled everything from Pirates to Sherlock Holmes, and Inception to Kung Fu Panda. There’s no genre he can’t write music for, so I look forward to seeing what he can do with Superman.

In related news, HitFix recently spoke to producer (and Christopher Nolan’s wife) Emma Thomas who mentioned that Zack Snyder is now in control of Superman. With Nolan readying The Dark Knight Rises for filming next year he will stick around until Superman has an “appropriate screenplay”, but will then leave Snyder to it.

And she made it clear that in the case of “Superman,” Nolan and David Goyer just had an idea they couldn’t believe wasn’t being explored by Warner Bros. And with Zack Snyder now on board as director, Nolan will be busy making “The Dark Knight Rises” and “we are handing it off to him.” So, take note anyone out there thinking this will be a strange Nolan/Snyder partnership. Thomas reiterated that they brought it to an appropriate screenplay and it’s now Snyder’s picture.

The Dark Knight Rises will be released July 2012, which will be followed by the Superman reboot in December. Zimmer will be having a superhero-filled year in 2012.

In a new interview the composer spoke about returning to work on the next Batman movie, and working with Nolan.

“He was going to come over next week,” chuckled Zimmer. “We start early. I know he’s puttering around with ideas, and we sort of sneak up on things.”

“Working with Chris, he gives me all the freedom in the world and encourages me to go and be daring and unusual and crazy and all those sorts of things and be able to be the sort of emotional center of the film,” he told PopcornBiz. “It’s very give and take. I’ll start long before he starts shooting. Our conversations start there and it goes both ways: we just have conversations about the movie and less about what the music has to do, and it really comes out of that, whereby I felt that there was a real emotional core to be had and that that was something that the music had to do and I hung on that for dear life.”

On the Batman films Zimmer has always collaborated with James Newton Howard, so that pairing will probably happen again. The music for Batman Begin, The Dark Knight and Inception is amazing, so i’ll be looking forward to hearing the score for The Dark Knight Returns.

Like a lot of people I am a big fan of Hans Zimmer, and I especially love his work with James Newton-Howard composing the scores for Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Since it was announced that Zimmer would be working on the music for Christopher Nolan’s Inception i’ve been eagerly awaiting to hear the results, and from these samples it doesn’t sound like people will be disappointed.

Sony have released a new video for Angels & Demons which consists of a collection of clips from the film, combined with the films score by Hans Zimmer. Even if the film ends up being rubbish, at least we can sit with our eyes closed and just listen to the music.
