On the other end Sucker Punch was abysmal even compared to its North American performance, more of this and others after the break.

Battle: Los Angeles scored $16.3 million compared to the $16.2 million that Rango had. Worldwide Battle now stands at $153.4 million on a $70 million budget while Rango passed the $200 million mark worldwide thanks to a new international total of $95.2 million. Unfortunately Rango cost about twice as much as Battle: Los Angeles so it still has a bit more to gross before it can be called a financial success.

Just Go With It found its way to 3rd place thanks to the $9 million it made last weekend, $62.6 million internationally and with the $100.5 million it has made so far in North America, this stinker has now grossed $163.2 million worldwide on an $80 million budget. On what the hell did they spend $80 million?

Gnomeo and Juliet was 4th with $8.2 million for $70.2 million and a worldwide total of $166.3 million. Depending on how much this cost (my gut says no more then $60 million, Wiki says $10 million but I don’t buy that) we might not be to far from Gnomeo and Juliet 2.

Limitless is slowly gaining ground, $6.6 million for $14.3 million in just 13 markets and a worldwide total (that will at least double in a month or so) of $58.1 million, all on a $27 million budget.

Sucker Punch, oh Sucker Punch, you were supposed to be this big blockbuster and instead you turned into a big disappointment. In 23 markets (including Spain, Italy, Mexico and Brazil) Sucker Punch only made $6.5 million and now it is looking at a worst case scenario final performance of $90 million worldwide while the best case scenario is $150 million and only if the movie makes a killing in the strong Asian markets (China, South Korea and Japan). Considering the $82 million budget, Sucker Punch won’t make Warner Bros money in its box office run, sorry Zack.

In 7th place The King’s Speech seems to still be going with $6 million and a mind blowing $373.4 million worldwide gross. This is a historical drama people, an R rated historical drama, $15 million budget, no flashy visuals, no 3D, yet it now stands as the 14th highest grossing movie of 2010 and will probably finish 13th above Tron Legacy.

In 8th place The Adjustment Bureau is strong with $5.5 million for $39.6 million and $95.2 million worldwide, $50 million budget on this one, looking good.

The Rite was surprisingly 9th $4.1 million while Red Riding Hood was 10th with a tiny bit less then that. Finally Yogi Bear somehow managed to pass the $200 million mark worldwide so probably based on how well DVD and Blue-Ray sales are, they might be looking at the prospect of a sequel, oh boy.

Read similar posts to Battle: Los Angeles stays on top around the world at Filmonic

Rango owned the weekend (Mar. 4-6)

Movie News

Beastly

Box Office

Box Office Results

Gnomeo and Juliet

Hall Pass

Rango

Take Me Home Tonight

The Adjustment Bureau

The King's Speech

The first weekend of the Spring season was dominated by an animated flick that secured 1/3 of the total box office revenue in the top 10. More about this and the rest after the break.

As mentioned above, Rango had no trouble securing 1st place over the past weekend with $38 million. It isn’t anything to write home about considering we’ve seen many similar movies scoring a lot higher but considering this isn’t the most kid focused animated movie and the lack of 3D, it should be ok if word of mouth is good and it leads to fine legs, similarly to what happened with How to Train Your Dragon ($43.7 million with 3D) last year. Rango only needs to make about 300 million worldwide to break even (it has done $56.9 million of that so far).

The Adjustment Bureau, the other new release, made it all the way to 2nd place with a $21.1 million gross that was in line with expectations. In 3rd place I think Beastly performed slightly better then expected with $9.8 million considering it only cost $17 million to make. Since last time I mentioned Beastly I didn’t go into any sort of detail regarding it, I will try and correct that mistake now. Alex Pettyfer (of I am Number Four fame) and Vanessa Hudgens star in this PG-13 reimagining of Beauty and the Beast and that is basically everything I know.

4th place belongs to previously numero uno Hall Pass, now with $8.8 million for a total of $27.6 million in 11 days while Gnomeo and Juliet is 5th with $7.2 million and a total gross of $84.4 million. Gnomeo will have a hard time getting to $100 million now that Rango has taken part of the family audiences.

Other noteworthy events would be Take Me Home Tonight bombing hard in 11nt place with just $3.4 million (not a good bet by Rogue Pictures it seems) while The King’s Speech was 8th with $6.2 million and $124 million so far.

Overall this was an ok weekend, hopefully one that will lead to many others.

Read similar posts to Rango owned the weekend (Mar. 4-6) at Filmonic

Rango goes up against The Adjustment Bureau

Movie News

Beastly

Box Office

Box Office Predictions

Gnomeo and Juliet

Rango

Take Me Home Tonight

The Adjustment Bureau

The King's Speech

Good collection of movies coming out this weekend and at least two of them are looking solid, namely animated flick Rango and sci-fi thriller The Adjustment Bureau. This month might have a lot going for it, hopefully that should translate to higher box office numbers cause I just about had enough of talking about movies scoring 1st place with $14 million openings.

Rango comes out in 3917 theaters and is the widest release of 2011 so far. Based on a story by Gore Verbinsky (Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy), also directed by him and having Johnny Depp lend his voice to the main character, Paramount must be hoping for some good money here. Industrial Light & Magic took care of the CGI (concept and rendering from start to finish) with a budget of around $135 million sans 3D (yes, an animated movies in 2011 without 3D, talk about being different). Reviews are good, buzz is good, hopefully numbers will be great but right now I’m expecting around $42 million for 1st place, similar to what How to Train Your Dragon made about 1 year ago.

For 2nd place there is absolutely no competition for The Adjustment Bureau starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt. This flick was initially supposed to come out in the middle of September last year so we’ve been seeing trailer for almost a year now. $21 million for should be about right.

Gnomeo and Juliet might return to 3rd place after failing to capture the top spot twice in a row, $8 million.

Take Me Home Tonight is the 3rd movie opening this weekend in 2003 theaters. This motion picture has been sitting on a shelve at Universal for about 3 years until Relativity Media’s Rogue Pictures aquired it for $10 million. If this ends up making over $20 million in North America then it will be a good bet made by Rogue. 4th place and $7.5 million is what I’m going for.

The King’s Speech will add another $7 million to its already generous tally for 5th place while the 4th new wide release of the weekend, Beastly (good old almost constantly failing CBS Films) is going to be 6th with $6.5 million.

Next weekend Sony serve us another alien invasion in Battle: Los Angeles, Disney says Mars Needs Moms while Warner Bros. takes on Red Riding Hood, Twilight style.

Read similar posts to Rango goes up against The Adjustment Bureau at Filmonic

I Am Number Four was number one around the world

Movie News

Black Swan

Box Office

box office international

Gnomeo and Juliet

I Am Number Four

Just Go With It

No Strings Attached

Rien a Declarer

Tangled

The King's Speech

True Grit

Yogi Bear

After winning two weeks in a row Black Swan has finally found its match in I Am Number Four. The Disney distributed movie needs all the success it can get after some rather disappointing numbers in North America, more on this and other titles after the break.

So I Am Number Four was not 4th but instead 1st but it did that with only $17.8 million, only $0.3 million more then Black Swan, nothing to write home about. So far I Am Number Four has banked $21.9 million outside North America for a worldwide total of $61.2 million. This flick needs to make at least twice as much for anyone to even consider a sequel.

Black Swan was close to a 3rd win in a row, but not close enough with $17.5 million for $124.2 million as we speak and $228.1 million worldwide. And to think Darren Aronofsky used to have trouble finding people to finance his movies, I bet those days are long gone now

The King’s Speech was strong again, $14.9 million and $154.3 million outside of North America. Worldwide total is now $270.1 million and this is bound to hit the $300 million mark in less then 2 weeks, probably will stop around $350 million, enough to become the 15th highest grossing film of 2010 worldwide, amazing performance.

Continuing the combo of Oscar nominated flicks for Best Picture, True Grit was 4th after getting a decent bump that pushed it to $13.3 million (compared to $10.1 million a week before) thanks to good 2nd place opening in France ($4.3 million). True Grit stands now at $47.1 million for a total of $214.4 million worldwide.

Gnomeo and Juliet was up this week all the way to 5th place with $9.3 million, $36.7 million so far and $112.3 million worldwide. Just Go With It continues to expand all the way to 6th with $9.3 million ($25 million) while No Strings Attached was down a bit, $9.1 million for $34.2 million and it just passed the $100 million mark worldwide. I can’t remember the last time Natalie Portman had such a good box office streak, Your Highness is up next.

Yogi Bear, Tangled and Rien a Declarer finish the top 10 with $8.3 million ($91.2 million), $7.9 million ($343 million) and $7.7 million ($69.8 million, $60.1 million of that in France alone)

Read similar posts to I Am Number Four was number one around the world at Filmonic

Hall Pass takes victory from Gnomeo and Juliet (Feb. 25-27)

Movie News

Box Office

Box Office Results

Drive Angry 3D

Gnomeo and Juliet

Hall Pass

I Am Number Four

Just Go With It

The King's Speech

True Grit

Unknown

In what was another miserable weekend at the box office, Gnomeo and Juliet was again extremely close to winning the weekend. Hollywood, seriously, bring some good stuff already.

Gnomeo and Juliet, an ok animated movie that would probably not score half as much during the more busy months, made $13.4 million for a total of $74.9 million in 18 days.

Unknown, not even close to the box office legs of Taken, only made $12.5 million for $42.9 million. But I guess at an average price of $25-30 million a pop, you can’t go wrong with this kind of box office numbers.

I am Number Four was, well, number 4 with $11 million, $38.4 million so far but for this one the budget stands at $60 million so it ain’t looking as good as it did with Unknown. I am Number Four is looking less and less like a series starter. Worldwide it stands at $60.3 million so maybe not all is lost.

Just Go With It finished 5th with $10.5 million and $79.4 million so far.

Out of the top 5, all the way to number 8th, 2011 Best Picture Oscar winner The King’s Speech grossed another $7.3 million (14th week since it came out) for a now new total of $114.9 million and $245.6 million worldwide.

Drive Angry bombed at number 9th with only $5.1 million and I am actually a bit sad because I heard some good things about this flick, particularly in regard to William Fichtner and his part.

For those still keeping tabs on this flick, True Grit, a Best Picture nominee at the Oscars this year, was 10th with $1.9 million and $167.2 million so far.

Read similar posts to Hall Pass takes victory from Gnomeo and Juliet (Feb. 25-27) at Filmonic

Gnomeo and Juliet against Hall Pass

Movie News

Box Office

Box Office Predictions

Drive Angry 3D

Gnomeo and Juliet

Hall Pass

Just Go With It

Unknown

Gnomeo and Juliet has really been something in the past 2 weeks and could potentially take the number 1 spot this weekend with a bit of help from newcomers Hall Pass and Drive Angry (in 3D, oh yeah). So Gnomes against an angry driver and a hall pass, right after the break.

Gnomes gnomes gnomes, debuts at number 3 then rises to number 2 the following week, and now has a great chance at the number 1 spot thanks in no small part to the box office being on a downward spiral for the past 2 months or so (with very few exception). Not that Gnomeo and Juliet is growing or anything, instead everything else is dropping faster and whatever comes out is just awful. So I think about $16 million should be enough for first place.

Hall Pass, what the hell is a hall pass? The real meaning of that would be this but in the context of this movie it actually means something a bit different, namely a week of freedom from your wife (or girlfriend) to do whatever you want, no questions asked. Starring Owen Wilson, Jason Sudeikis and Christina Applegate, this could in theory make for an funny movie similar to The Hangover. Unfortunately Owen Wilson’s track record as of late doesn’t look to good and the Farrelly bros have long lost their mojo. I can see this doing $15 million for 2nd place.

Number 1 last week, Unknown should gross $14 million for 3rd place while newcomer Drive Angry starring Nic Cage ain’t looking bad at all, so I’m generous, $12 million. Coming in 2290 theaters (some of those in 3D) this should be a guilty pleasure for fans of the genre.

Last but not least (unfortunately) Just Go With It will be 5th with $11 million, probably, hopefully not.

Next week Eric Foreman (Topher Grace) plays around in the 80′s in Take My Home Tonight (this song), Gore Verbinsky and Johnny Depp go from pirates to cowboys in the animated flick Rango, Emily Blunt and Matt Damon are not meant to be with each other in The Adjustment Bureau while CBS unleash yet another movie, Beastly.

Read similar posts to Gnomeo and Juliet against Hall Pass at Filmonic

Black Swan wins again around the world

Movie News

Black Swan

Box Office

box office international

Gnomeo and Juliet

No Strings Attached

Paul

Rien a Declarer

Sanctum

Tangled

The King's Speech

True Grit

Yogi Bear

Boy oh boy, Black Swan is really making the rounds out there, second weekend in a row in first place while possible Best Picture winner in 3 days (Oscars), The King’s Speech, is just as impressive. More about those 2 and 8 others right after the break.

$17.6 million was enough for Black Swan to win again and it now stands at $101.6 million for a worldwide total of $203.6 million. I think soon enough I might need to revise upwards my previous $250 million prediction when it comes to Black Swan‘s final worldwide gross.

The King’s Speech was 2nd with $15.8 million, up from a week ago thanks to some new markets where it just opened. This is now at $130.7 outside North America and $236.2 million worldwide, absolutely insane. Out of that total $60.3 million was made in the UK (The Queen made $18.3 million), second highest territory after North America.

While still in 3rd, Tangled eased to $12.1 million (from $17.5 a weekend before) and now stands at $328 million internationally and $522.3 million worldwide. While it started rolling a week before, No Strings Attached made its debut in the top 10 only this past weekend at number 4 with $10.9 million for a $21.9 million total. This still has a lot more territories to open in so expect even higher numbers in the coming weeks.

Yogi Bear at number 5 was flat, $10.4 million compared to $10.3 a week before. $77.9 million is the new total for this crappy flick while top 10 regular Rien a Declarer (Nothing to Declare) made another $10.2 million for $59.5 million, $51 million coming exclusively from France.

One of my favorite movies of last year and also nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, True Grit, was 7th with $10.1 million thanks to 20 more countries it just opened in. Unfortunately westerns have a tendency to not perform to well outside the US of A so this one has only grossed $29 million thus far. Hopefully with France and Germany this weekend, it can go up a notch.

In 8th place is a movie I very recently enjoyed very very much, Paul opened with $9 million in the UK (and only there for the time being). This opens on March 18th in North America, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, don’t need to say more then that, go and see it, you won’t be sorry.

Finally Gnomeo and Juliet in 9th place and Sanctum in 10th place, Gnomeo with $8.2 million for $15.8 million and the other made $7.6 million for $40.4 million.

Read similar posts to Black Swan wins again around the world at Filmonic

Unknown has photo finish win over Presidents weekend (Feb. 18-21)

Movie News

Big Mommas: Like Father

Gnomeo and Juliet

I Am Number Four

Just Go With It

Unknown

Every year the third Monday of February is Presidents Day in the United States, a federal holiday that turns a normal 3-day box office weekend into a 4-day box office weekend. This one was really something and you will see why right after the break.

$37,298 between number 1 and number 2, the 14th all time smallest difference, a true photo finish. Unknown starring Liam Neeson was the lucky movie to finish the 4-day weekend with $25,453,015, just enough to beat runner up Gnomeo and Juliet, previously in 3rd place, now 2nd with $25,415,717. So as expected, Unknown managed to pull very good numbers that should, depending on how well it does next week, tell us if it can or can’t reach the $100 million mark. But I can safely say that it won’t bring in $145 million like Taken did 2 years ago.

Gnomeo and Juliet is the real surprise here, coming incredibly close to winning the weekend, this 3D animated flick has some of the most impressive legs I’ve seen in a long time. Unfortunately for Gnomeo, it only has one more “free” weekend before Rango comes out, the next big animated flick. Gnomeo and Juliet has grossed so far $56.4 million in 11 days.

I am Number Four is number 3 and a few days ago I actually thought I will use something like this for a silly pun in the title. Disappointingly enough Number Four did not manage to live up to any kind of expectations and only made $22.7 million, a far cry from the $28-30 million that the studio wanted. Now the future of this series hangs in the international performance and the legs it will (or won’t) show in North America.

In 4th place Adam Sandler’s Just Go With It showed the same level of staying power that we have come to expect from his stupid yet very popular movies. $21.5 million for a new total of $64.1 million in 11 days.

Finally in 5th place, the movie I did not want to see here, Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son with $18.7 million. The previous entry in this series, Big Mommas House 2 opened to $27.7 million 5 years ago (on a 3-day weekend) so at least people are finally starting to avoid this like they should.

Read similar posts to Unknown has photo finish win over Presidents weekend (Feb. 18-21) at Filmonic

I Am Number Four versus Unknown

Movie News

Big Mommas: Like Father

Box Office

Box Office Predictions

Gnomeo and Juliet

I Am Number Four

Just Go With It

Like Son

Unknown

A possible franchise started, an old reheated recipe and a sequel no one asked for, those are the offerings of the weekend. February keeps lingering while we wait for the next big blockbuster and if one of the titles opening today could be just that, well you’ll find out after the break (answer is no).

I am Number Four is an interesting offering from Disney, a sci-fi adventure opening in 3154 theaters and hoping to be the starter of a new franchise. After all it is based on a recently published novel (like really recently, August 3rd 2010, obviously DreamWorks got the rights way before it was published, over a year before that actually) that is also part of a proposed 6-book series. I’m thinking the idea would be to make at least 6 movies if the first one is successful enough (I know, right). With a budget situated around $50-$60 million it won’t be to hard for this to be that franchise starter considering I’m expecting it to open with $30 million for number 1. What will make or break this are the legs and if this can go up to $90 million or more in North America (and just as much around the world), then we might see another I am Number Four, but if it only makes $60 then it will be harder.

Unknown is the old reheated recipe, a movie we’ve seen before with the only standout being Liam Neeson. This is opening in 3043 theaters and I’m getting a very strong Taken vibe here, like maybe they are trying to replicate the success of that. Now Taken opened 2 years ago at the end of January to $24.7 million from 3183 theaters and I’m expecting similar result from Unknown, about $26 million to be more exact, very good for 2nd place.

Just Go With It will probably be 3rd with $18 million or so while Gnomeo and Juliet should gross $17 million for 4th place.

Finally in 5th place we get the sequel I am pretty sure no one asked for, also a strong contender for dumbest title of the year (not to mention worst, standing at a glorious 0% Rotten Tomato rating at the moment) Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son. This is like taking the worst ideas you could possibly have for a sequel and putting all of them into one disaster, this thing. But even with all of that there will still be plenty of people paying their hard earned money to see Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son and that should push it to $16 million.

Next week Nic Cage drives angry in Drive Angry (in 3D) while Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis get a Hall Pass (if don’t know what that is, watch the trailer or see the movie).

Read similar posts to I Am Number Four versus Unknown at Filmonic
