Twitter grew tremendously in 2009, mainly because it has become a people search engine. News, events, and movies become trending topics and you can see what people are saying about them in real-time. As we will soon be heading into 2010 Twitter has complied a list of the top trending topics (ie. most talked about) of 2009 for different categories, and below is the list of movies that took over the Twitter-sphere this year:

1. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
2. New Moon
3. District 9
4. Paranormal Activity
5. Star Trek
6. True Blood
7. Transformers 2
8. Watchmen
9. Slumdog Millionaire
10. G.I. Joe

I have no idea what True Blood is doing there. Harry Potter and New Moon were expected, however the movie that takes the #3 spot is interesting. I can remember around the time District 9 was released Twitter was full of positive buzz for the film, and that buzz most likely encouraged people to see it. I have no way of proving it but I’m pretty sure the Twitter buzz contributed to the film making over $200 million worldwide. Twitter probably contributed to the success of Paranormal Activity too.

What can we expect for next year? Well we have Eclipse and Deathly Hallows being released so they will probably hit the top spots again. I can imagine Iron Man 2 becoming a trending topic for a while, and maybe Kick-Ass will be the ‘District 9′ of 2010?

In early January the list will be narrowed down to 7, then later in the month members of the visual effects branch will watch excerpts from the movies, and the list will be narrowed down to 3. Earlier this year it was a showdown between Iron Man, The Dark Knight and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, with Button’s ageing effects coming out on top.

Since Avatar Day when we got a glimpse at 15 minutes of footage I’ve had my money on Avatar winning, and from the early reviews it seems it will be a serious contender. I’m glad District 9 got a nod. Out of all the films nominated it had the lowest budget ($30 million) and the guys at WETA did a great job with those financial constraints.

While critics haven’t been that kind to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and the general consensus is that it “is largely a cartoonish, over-the-top action fest propelled by silly writing, inconsistent visual effects, and merely passable performances”, it still managed to rake in $100 worldwide on it’s opening weekend, which means only one thing: G.I. Joe 2.

From The L.A Times:

The film came in about $10 million under the opening weekend of “Star Trek,” which earned $75.2 million domestically and about $35 million overseas. “G.I. Joe” did better internationally, where it grossed a studio-estimated $44 million, despite not yet launching in several key markets, including Germany and Italy. It underperformed “Trek” in the U.S. and Canada, where it opened to $56.2 million.

That’s certainly good enough for Paramount to claim victory, however, and start thinking about the future. The studio’s vice chairman, Rob Moore, confirmed that a sequel will soon go into development. The film’s lead actors are contractually obligated to return for another film, though director Stephen Sommers is not.

Paramount knew G.I. Joe wasn’t all that as they only allowed a select group of critics to see it before everyone else. However, money speaks louder than reviews and we will be seeing the cast in their X-Men knock-off suits once again.

A new Japanese trailer for G.I. Joe: The Rise Of The Cobra has hit the ‘nets and actually serves as the best trailer this film has seen. Maybe it’s because they don’t linger too long on the wooden acting or the groan-worthy lines, instead choosing to fade in and out of CGI sequences.

However, one of the opening shots shows Destro (played by Christopher Eccleston) talking to a masked, greasy-haired, nearly unrecognizable Joseph Gordon-Levitt who will be playing The Doctor, also aliased as Cobra Commander.

How Joseph Gordon-Levitt is going to act under all that crap still remains a mystery, since it’s not really a step up from the reflective visor or hood his animated counterpart wore. I’m guessing that eye is going to do so much squinting! Squinting in anger at being thwarted by Dennis Quaid!

Empire got themsevles an international poster for G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, which looks rather cool. Nice contract between the blue and orange. Nice photoshopped ass on Sienna Miller. However, due to my ability to read I can’t help but wonder who actually gets paid to write these taglines. They are rubbish. Observe:

We still have another 3 months before G.I. Joe is released. Hopefully they can hire a better tagline writer between then and now.

Below we have what we can assume is an international trailer (it has subtitles) for G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Paramount have been quiet with the marketing for this so far, although it isn’t released until August so they have plenty of time to step things up a notch. The trailer is similar to the previous one in terms of explosions, effects and cool money shot scenes. I would describe G.I. Joe as this years Transformers, however this years Transformers is of course Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, so i’ll call it Transformers’ younger cousin who has a fetish for leather.

Something I noticed from the trailer is that the villains in this are played by British actors (Sienna Miller and Christopher Eccleston). It’s nice to see Hollywood have taken a different approach when casting the villains…oh wait…no they haven’t.

It is inevitable in movies that if you have two good looking females on opposing sides, they have to have a good old cat fight at some point. G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra is keeping with tradition and we will be getting a Sienna Miller vs. Rachel Nichols “violent girl-fight”. Oh, and they’ll be wearing them leather suit while going at it.

Sienna said her favorite scene, however, was decidedly low-tech, depicting her evil Cobra assassin pulling hair with Joe agent “Scarlett” O’Hara. “There’s a really, really good girl fight between Rachel Nichols and myself,” she explained. “It’s like a proper, violent girl-fight scene. And we both worked so hard for the choreography and the training of it. … We both got hurt. I’m clumsy, so I slipped on a rubber bullet at one point and sprained my wrist quite badly. She ran into a flame and got burned.”

I hope we get a glimpse of this in the next trailer, whenever that will be.

Earlier today we got a mere 12 seconds of it, however now we have the whole thing. Watch it below!

This reminds me of Transformers. It’s got cool action and special effects and will be your fun popcorn summer movie. Nothing wrong with that, unless you were wanting it to be all serious like The Dark Knight. The scenes with Snake Eyes jumping between cars look interesting, and the full trailer shouldn’t be too far away.

To add to the evergrowing presence of ‘teasers of teasers’ Entertainment Tonight previewed 12 seconds from the G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra TV spot that will appear during the Super Bowl. It’s hard to get a good enough impression with only 12 seconds, but it looks kinda cool. It could be the case that they have just thrown all of their major action sequences together as there is a lot of movement. However, it still looks good. I can’t wait until we get some more footage so we can see whether this will be rubbish or not.

AICN were given 5 new posters for G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra, featuring Sienna Miller as The Baroness, Channing Tatum as Duke, Marlon Wayans as Ripcord, Ray Park as Snake Eyes and Rachel Nichols as Scarlett.

All these posters do is prove that another possible franchise can also have their characters in leather suits, not just The Matrix or X-Men. We haven’t really seen anything from this movie yet, however we should be getting a TV spot during the Super Bowl, and then hopefully a full trailer after that.
