Columbia has released the second official trailer for Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance. Following a recent screening at Butt-Numb-A-Thon the reaction wasn’t the best. Though /Film thought it was better than the first film, they say the “script is a boring mess” and the 3D is “horrible”.

The new trailer doesn’t do anything to counter this negative buzz as it is pretty much just action and money shots (there’s a plot in there somewhere). Still, it looks crazy as hell and I’m sure some folk will get enjoyment seeing Ghost Rider breathing and pissing fire.

According to The Wrap Sony has given Ghost Rider 2 the greenlight so it can begin production almost immediately, but they have cut the budget from $135 million to $75 million. Nicolas Cage may have to ditch the motorcycle.

The studio has also partnered with Hyde Park Entertainment to co-finance the film as Sony already has a lot of money invested in the Spider-Man reboot, Men in Black 3 and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Hyde Park will also release the sequel overseas, while Sony will keep domestic distribution rights. Usually budgets for sequels increase by about $20-50 million, but in this case it appears Sony is keeping the risk low (Ghost Rider made $229 million worldwide in 2007).

According to Heat Vision Irish actor Ciaran Hinds is in negotiations with Columbia to play the Devil in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. In the film Johnny Blaze, aka Ghost Rider (Nicolas Cage) is hiding out in remote Eastern Europe and is struggling to repress his curse. Blaze is recruited by a sect to take on the devil (Hinds), who wants to take over his mortal son’s body.

Italian actress-singer Violante Placido also said to be in talks to join the cast, presumable as the female lead. Filming will begin towards the end of November in Romania and Turkey.

Ciaran Hinds has been rather busy lately. He is currently shooting The Woman in Black with Daniel Radcliffe, and will appear in Deathly Hallows: Part II next year as Dumbledore’s brother. Hinds also filmed Disney’s John Carter of Mars earlier this year where he plays Tardes Mors, a leader of one of the two warring tribes on Mars.

According to SHH Columbia Pictures has set a February 17, 2012 release date for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

Nicolas Cage will once again play Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider but this time Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, the duo behind Crank, Crank: High Voltage, and Gamer, will direct.

Cage revealed earlier this year he will be heading to Romania and “Ghostrider has to ride up to Dracula’s castle”, which suggests he will be battling Dracula next time round. David Goyer has been working on the script and he previously mentioned that the film is set 8 years after the first one, and is a “bit more stripped down and darker”.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance has no direct competition at the moment, but in the realm of superhero 2012 will see The Avengers, Batman 3, Spider-Man, and probably Wolverine 2. Columbia has wisely avoided those.

Nicolas Cage was also in talks at the time, however while appearing on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson Cage confirmed that he had just “made the deal today” and Neveldine and Taylor will indeed be directing.

Despite reports in April that Columbia may move ahead without him, Nicolas Cage is also in early negotiations to reprise his role as Johnny Blaze, although Eva Mendes will not be returning.

Apparently Columbia has to begin production on another Ghost Rider movie by November 14th 2010, otherwise the rights will revert back to Marvel. This means they will want to begin filming later this year. David Goyer has been working on the script and he previously mentioned that the film is set 8 years after the first film.

“I hate to say it’s more realistic, because he’s got a flaming skull for a head, but it’s a bit more stripped down and darker. It’s definitely changing tone. What ‘Casino Royale’ was to the Bond movies, hopefully this will be to ‘Ghost Rider.’ This story picks up eight years after the first film,” said Goyer. “You don’t have to have seen the first film. It doesn’t contradict anything that happened in the first film, but we’re pretending that our audience hasn’t seen the first film. It’s as if you took that same character where things ended in the first film and then picked it up eight years later—he’s just in a much darker, existential place.”

Vulture are reporting that if Nicolas Cage isn’t free to film Ghost Rider 2 at some point this year then Columbia Pictures may have to continue on with the movie without him. The reason? Rights. Apparently Columbia has to begin production on another Ghost Rider movie by November 14th 2010, otherwise the rights will revert back to Marvel. While fans may be happy about the prospect of the character going home, Columbia isn’t.

Insiders tell us that Columbia is asking Marvel for an extension. But time is running out. Cage has spoken about his desire to make a second Ghost Rider; the issue is whether his schedule will be free before the deadline. Disney is also hoping to get him for a third National Treasure with Jerry Bruckheimer, which could be shooting as early as this fall and would presumably earn the star a hefty paycheck.

But Columbia desperately needs a blockbuster for 2011, now that Spider-Man has been pushed to 2012 — not to mention that no exec wants to lose a moneymaking franchise to a rival studio.

Would the film work without Cage? One unconnected producer who’s worked in the comic-book genre gave Vulture an emphatic no, pointing out that the Ghost Rider character isn’t particularly well-known; any familiarity with it comes from associating the face of Cage — a worldwide box-office draw — with the title. Compare that to Iron Man 2, for which billboards all over the nation show nary a glimpse of star Robert Downey Jr. You don’t need the star to sell that movie, you just need the suit.

I’m not particularly looking forward to another Ghost Rider movie, with or without Cage. The first film made around $250 million back in 2007 but the negative reviews meant that there wasn’t much demand for a sequel. I got the feeling Columbia were just going to ‘throw out’ another film just to keep the rights, although writer David Goyer said “what Casino Royale was to the Bond movies, hopefully this will be to Ghost Rider.”

David Goyer’s script is set 8 years after the first film and is apparently much darker and realistic, although if Nicolas Cage can’t return and they have to hire another actor they might as well just call it a reboot.
