It started with Iron Man 2, a good sequel to a great movie, a sequel that in the end didn’t manage to live up to the hype created by way to high expectations. For lack of space I won’t go into every movie that came out this summer, but I will give you a top 5 of the most noteworthy ones. Now remember, this is not a list based only on box office performance, this is a list based on performance versus expectations and that is why, well, see for yourself:

5. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse ($653.1 million worldwide)

For lack of better words, this was a hit and considering New Moon had such an awful reception and dropped like a rock, very few (if any) expected Eclipse to match the $296.4 million the last one made in North America, but it did, hitting $296.6 million just 2 day ago. The average budget helped also put this film ahead of Iron Man 2 (but remember, box office success does not equal a good movie, just saying).

4. The Karate Kid ($282.3 million worldwide)

Who would have thought that a $40 million remake to an 80′s classic could turn into such a success story. Produced by Will Smith (father) to serve as a star vehicle for Jaden Smith (son) and shot in China starring Jackie Chan as the master (a role that made famous the late Pat Morita, nominated for an Oscar for the first Karate Kid, RIP).

3. Despicable Me ($281.3 million worldwide)

The first full length feature for animation studio Illumination Entertainment turned into one of the biggest surprise hits of the year. With an impressive $225.5 million in North America so far, this is a great start for a new franchise, one that will help Universal (the distributor) a lot.

2. Inception ($568.3 million worldwide)

Any other year this would have been number 1 on this list. Inception showed once again why Chris Nolan is so well regarded by fans, fanboys and critics alike, creating another great spectacle worthy of your hard earned money spent on a ticket (or more). Inception was without a doubt the wild card of the summer, Warner invested a lot in a movie that could have very well turned into a flop.

1. Toy Story 3 ($941.2 million worldwide)

This kind of success you just can’t overlook and while this is the sequel to a very popular franchise, 11 years have passed since we had Toy Story 2 and there was fear that people might not be so much into talking toys as they were a decade ago. Ultimately Toy Story 3 managed to live up to the hype and pass $400 million in North America and will soon reach $1 billion worldwide, becoming only the 7th movie to do that.

Honorable mentions would have to be Iron Man 2, Shrek Forever After, Grown Ups, Salt, The Other Guys or The Expendables.

Not so honorable are Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Robin Hood, The Last Airbender, Sex and the City 2 or The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.

The rest of the year looks to have just as many surprises (or not) and I personally can’t wait to see how Potter 7 or Tron 2 will do at the box office.

Read similar posts to Summer 2010: The Box Office Review on Filmonic

Inception versus Cage

Movie News

Box Office

Box Office Predictions

Despicable Me

Eclipse

Inception

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

Toy Story 3

Actually the title should be Inception versus Nicholas Cage but really, there’s no contest, Inception will win the weekend without breaking a sweat and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is going to need a miracle to even reach 2nd place. Most experts estimate it should have a similar opening to Star Trek, $75 million but I’m actually going higher, $81 million. First Shutter Island, now this, Leonardo DiCaprio is having a great year, no doubt about it.

On the other hand The Sorcerer’s Apprentice opened on Wednesday and has grossed so far $7 million in 2 days, really disappointing for Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer. This is coming in 3504 theaters and it should do around $17-$20 million for the weekend for a 5 day total of $24-$27 million, even lower then the already low expectations of the studio. First Prince of Persia and now this, things aren’t looking to bright for Jerry Bruckheimer anymore and I bet he can’t wait to get Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides out already (same goes for Disney).

Despicable Me is going to finish in 2nd place after Inception with around $28-$32 million and based on the weekdays that will follow, this could still be on track for over $200 million in North America when all is said and done, regardless, they are already working on a the sequel.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon, in 4th place, will probably settle for about half of what Despicable Me makes, decent hold that should get the movie very close to 270 million in just 19 days. Definitely going to pass $300 million this time.

And finally Toy Story 3, in 5th place, probably $14 million, for what should look like $365 million made in a single month. Getting ever so close to $400 million but I doubt it can pass Shrek 2 ($441.2 million) and become the highest grossing animate movie ever (not adjusted for inflation, obviously).

Inception (WB) $81 million (NEW)

Despicable Me (Uni) $31 million ($116.6M)

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (BV) $18 million (NEW)

Twilight Saga: Eclipse (Sum) $16 million ($267M)

Toy Story 3 (BV) $14 million ($365M)

Read similar posts to Inception versus Cage on Filmonic

Despicable winner (Jul 9-11)

Movie News

Box Office

Box Office Results

Despicable Me

Eclipse

Predators

The Last Airbender

Toy Story 3

Twilight

Despicable Me managed to stomp every prediction regarding its opening by over-performing beyond expectations and reaching $56.3 million when it wasn’t expected to pass $40 million. Surprises like this make things interesting at the box office.

For a movie that cost $69 million and coming from newborn animation studio Illumination Entertainment (I have a feeling we will continue to see good things coming from them in the future under Universal’s distribution deal), this is a pretty darn good score, so good that it passed previous highest grossing computer animated flick distributed by Universal Pictures, The Tale of Despereaux (with $50.8 million) in just 3 days. With Toy Story 3 still making the rounds and holding a lot of the 3D screens, makes this performance all the more impressive. So, Despicable Me 2 (bad title, I really hope it won’t be this) coming out in 2013?

Also strong was The Twilight Saga: Eclipse with $31.7 million (that I totally called) down only 51.1% from last weekend (an all time best for the series, obviously helped by the fact this one opened on a Wednesday instead of a Friday). With $239.7 million so far (including Monday numbers) in 13 days, Eclipse is neck a neck with New Moon, $237.8 million after the same amount of days. I believe now more then before that this one might pass the $300 million mark in North America. Oh, and for those wondering, Eclipse stands at $458.7 million worldwide with the movie still not out in a lot of countries.

Predators performed exactly as expected (called it again), $24.7 million and a great debut for this R-rated genre movie that I can’t wait to watch. Hopefully it will at least show decent holds at the box office, good enough to carry it past the $60 million mark before the end of its run. Also, second best opening for the series (first if we leave Alien vs Predator out).

As mentioned above, Toy Story 3 is still rolling the big bucks, this time $21 million for $339.2 million so far and if we include the $2.8 million it did on Monday, this just became Pixar’s highest grossing movie ever in North America (not adjusted for inflation, obviously) beating former champ Finding Nemo ($339.7 million). $555.1 million worldwide and it has barely scratched the surface internationally. $900 million definitely a strong possibility, $1 billion not out of the question either.

The Last Airbender, $16.6 million, $101.8 million so far (including Monday) and going down, maybe not as fast as expected but still fast enough to keep it from reaching $140-$150 million.

Grown Ups keeps making twice as much as Knight & Day ($15.8 million versus $7.7 million) on a weekend basis with Swiss precision while the Karate Kid also continues to dominate The A-Team in the battle of the 80′s ($5.3 million versus $1.7 million).

Finally Cyrus ends the top 10 with $1.2 million after expanding from 77 to 200 theaters this weekend.

Next weekend is looking even more interesting with The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Inception, my money is on Inception but more on that soon.

For a more detailed look at the top 10 numbers for last weekend, go here.

Read similar posts to Despicable winner (Jul 9-11) on Filmonic

Despicable Predators

Movie News

Box Office

Box Office Predictions

Despicable Me

Eclipse

Predators

The Last Airbender

Toy Story 3

Another weekend, another batch of new movies, this time Despicable Me and Predators. With a 79% RottenTomato average so far, this looks like it might have something to say, and who knows, it could become this year’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. I see around $30-35 million for the weekend in a tight race for first place with The Twilight Saga: Eclipse that should also finish around $30 million.

Predators, from Fox opening in 2669 theaters, is trying to be a love letter to fans of the classic 1987 Predator staring good old Governator Arnold Schwarzenegger and so far based on what critics say (surprisingly 63% after 115 reviews counted on RottenTomatoes) it might just be that, the long lost sequel that we always wanted could finally be here. So I say $24 million this weekend and a good shot at making around $60-70 million in total at the North American box office. And yes, the name Predators is a homage to Aliens, the sequel to Alien.

Toy Story 3 keeps on having fantastic weekdays and is headed for around $20 million this weekend while Grown Ups will pass the $100 million mark before the end of Sunday, thus becoming the 11th movie in the career of Adam Sandler to reach that high.

Finally The Last Airbender should bring in another $16-17 million or so over the weekend for a total of probably $100 million in 11 days. Looking at the reviews and most of the fans reactions, I’m sure Paramount must be happy that none of those had a huge effect on the tickets they managed to sell so far, but it will from now on and I don’t think The Last Airbender will finish its box office run with more then $140 million, if that.

Despicable Me (Uni) $34 million (NEW)

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (Sum) $31 million ($234,6M)

Predators (Fox) $24 million (NEW)

Toy Story 3 (BV) $20 million ($338.2M)

The Last Airbender (Par) $17 million ($100M)

Read similar posts to Despicable Predators on Filmonic

Eclipse at the box office (Jul 2-4)

Movie News

Box Office

Box Office Results

Eclipse

The Last Airbender

Toy Story 3

Twilight

It was a good weekend at the North American box office with The Twilight Saga: Eclipse leading the pack. Now that might seem a little small compared to what Twilight and New Moon did ($69.6 million and $142.8 million) but the real story here is Eclipse actually opened on Wednesday and has made since (weekend included) $176.3 million in 6 days (Monday included). So if we look in perspective, it’s pretty much in line with what New Moon made ($178.8 million in 6 days).

Add to that another $100 million from the few international markets Eclipse opened in and you’ve got a very impressive $276.5 million worldwide for a movie that cost about $68 million. I expect this to finish with around the same numbers as New Moon, maybe a bit more, $300 million or so in North America and another $450-$500 million from the rest of the world for what could become the first movie in the Twilight series to reach $800 million worldwide. Keep hitting that iron while it’s hot Summit Entertainment, as long as you keep making stuff like Red, I can take all the Twilight movies you can push.

Next in line is The Last Airbender (formerly Avatar: The Last Airbender) based on the popular (actually very popular by looking at the numbers) animated series of the same name. This one, despite some of the worst reviews of the year, managed to open with $40.3 million over the weekend, but again, just like with Eclipse, the number might seem small but in reality they are bigger because this opened on Thursday to $17.5 million and went on to make $69.3 million in 5 days (Monday included). Will this drop like a rock next weekend and just barely match the $150 million budget Paramount invested in it? We’ll just have to wait a few more days.

Toy Story 3 is in third place after 3 weeks with $30.2 million (again, smaller number because the 4th of July fell on Sunday) and has made so far $301.8 million in 18 days matching Shrek 2 ($302.6 million in 18 days) as the fastest animated movie to pass $300 million (7th overall). With $150.8 million from the rest of the world so far (not having opened in most of the big markets yet) Toy Story 3 has generated $452.6 million worldwide. I can see this last entry in the series gettingt to $400 million or so in North America (and probably finish the year in first place if Harry Potter doesn’t have something good to say in 3D) and as high as $900 million and even $1 billion worldwide. First Alice in Wonderland, now this, having two movies pass 1 billion in the same year would be something Disney can only dream of.

From this point on everything is pretty standard, Grown Ups made $19 million for $77.6 million and will surely be another $100+ million Adam Sandler movie, Knight & Day did $10.4 million and $45.7 million so far while Karate Kid keeps on giving (to Sony and the Smith family) with another $8 million that adds to $151.5 million for Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan.

The A-Team, Get Him to the Greek, Shrek Forever After and Letters to Juliet (making a comeback) finish the top 10.

Read similar posts to Eclipse at the box office (Jul 2-4) on Filmonic

Eclipse, Toys and an Airbender

Movie News

Box Office

Box Office Predictions

Eclipse

The Last Airbender

Toy Story 3

Twilight

Long time no see but my final exams have kept me away from writing here in the past weeks. Well now I’m back, hopefully in full force and just in time for the release of what is certainly going to be one of the biggest hits of the year, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.

This time, while trying to estimate the weekend for each of the top 5 movies at the box office, I will cheat a little since the releases of the week opened already, Eclipse on Wednesday and The Last Airbender on Thursday, and I have those numbers. So how is the weekend going to look then?

Well The Twilight Saga: Eclipse has had a tremendously successful opening day ($68.5 million) that ranks as the second highest ever (The Twilight Saga: New Moon opened to $72.7 million just 7 months ago) and is also the widest release in history with 4416 theaters ready to show the latest chapter in the vampire romance saga. Eclipse made another $24.2 million on Thursday for a total of $92.7 million so far in just 2 days. Now I expect around $75 million this weekend for the Stephenie Meyer novel turned movie, that should lead to around $168 million in 5 days, add to that equally high international numbers and Summit Entertainment got another phenomenal hit on their hands for a price tag of just $68 million, money well spent with this kind of return on investment if you ask me.

In the other corner going for a completely different demographic is The Last Airbender (previously Avatar: The Last Airbender) based on the very popular animated series with the same name. M. Night Shyamalan is back in the writer/director chair with his most expensive project yet and at the same time easily the most hated by critics standing at just 9% (94 rotten and only 9 fresh, but I still want to see it, simply out of curiosity, probably on DVD). Now what critics think of a movie doesn’t always mean much to the people that have to actually pay to see said movie, so The Last Airbender still managed a decent if not impressive (considering the bad press) $16.3 million in 3169 theaters. I’m guessing, similarly to Eclipse, this is going to be a frontloaded movie so it should slightly drop on Friday and maybe go up a little on Saturday and down (a lot) on Sunday since it is the 4th of July in the US. So $35 million for a 4-day opening of $51 million. Maybe not exactly what Paramount expected when they payed for this, but still a lot better then it could have gone (looke at Fox and Dragon Ball: Evolution).

The rest of the holdovers should do well since it is a holiday weekend and because the 4th of July is Sunday, Monday will be inflated so expect overall big number all around. Toy Story 3 might even pull a fast one on The Last Airbender and grab that 2nd place, actually I am counting on that.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (Sum) $75M ($168M)

Toy Story 3 (BV) $37M ($295.8M)

The Last Airbender (Par) $35M ($51.3M)

Grown Ups (Sony) $20M ($78.5M)

Night & Day (Fox) $10M ($45.3M)

Read similar posts to Eclipse, Toys and an Airbender on Filmonic

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse has a record breaking opening night

Movie News

Box Office

Eclipse

It’s that time of the year again. This number surpasses the previous midnight record of $26.3 million set on opening day last November by The Twilight Saga: New Moon.

If ‘Twihards’ continue this relentless demand for Edward Cullen and friends Eclipse could be on track for one of the biggest opening days ever (beating another record held by New Moon).

The reviews for the third film have been kinder than the last outing. Eclipse currently stands at 51% Rotten on Rotten Tomatoes compared to New Moon‘s 27%. However, despite its huge financial success Summit has yet to produce a movie than has been accepted by both fans and non-fans alike. I haven’t seen the films so I can’t comment but the general consensus is that it is hard to embrace the films if you haven’t read the books beforehand, and by making average to below average movies Summit aren’t helping to convert people.

Although looking at the numbers I don’t think they really need to. New Moon made $700 million worldwide last year so expect Eclipse to make similar numbers.

Will you be seeing Eclipse at some point?
