Die Hard 5 has a title (A Good Day To Die Hard), a director in John Moore (Max Payne), and a release date of February 14, 2013. Now 20th Century Fox and Bruce Willis are testing actors to play John McClane’s son who, in the film, joins his farther in Russia and gets into trouble with local forces.

According to Variety:

In the next week, Willis will begin reading with actors for the role of John McClane’s son, including Ben Foster, Paul Dano, Aaron Paul and Milo Ventimiglia. Fox is also showing strong interest in Paul Walker, but he’s not expected to test.

As the pic began clearing obstacles, the role of McClane’s son has been on the minds of most of the young actors in Hollywood, as insiders say it could open the door to inherit the “Die Hard” franchise — much like Jeremy Renner could wind up the face of Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible” series, or Shia LaBeouf in “Indiana Jones.”

Bruce Willis will likely have a key role in determining who gets the part (especially if they’re to carry on the franchise in the future). On paper Paul Walker has the advantage, coming off the $600m success of Fast Five, but both Paul Dano and Ben Foster have worked with Willis in the past. I suppose any of the names mentioned above could play John McClane’s son and whatever it entails.

Filming will begin in Russia early next year so casting confirmations will likely be appearing over the next few weeks.

20th Century Fox today set release dates for a number of it’s upcoming films, most notably Taken 2, Die Hard 5, and the Percy Jackson sequel.

Taken 2, starring Liam Neeson, Famke Janssen and Maggie Grace will be hitting on October 5, 2012. Olivier Megaton (Colombiana) is directing, and filming is scheduled to begin in October. No story details have been revealed, but earlier this year it was mentioned part of the movie would be shot in Istanbul, so some of the action will likely be set there.

Bruce Willis will return as John McClane once again in A Good Day To Die Hard (Die Hard 5), which will hit screens February 14, 2013. John Moore (Max Payne) will direct and the film will be set mostly in Russia with John McClane accompanied there by his son, where the two become drawn into a conflict with local forces.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters will open March 27, 2013 and Logan Lerman, Brandon T. Jackson and Alexandra Daddario are expected to return. Thor Freudenthal (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) will direct while Chris Columbus, who directed the first film, will produce. The second novel by Rick Riordan follows Percy and his group of friends as they head to the titular sea to find the mythical Golden Fleece and to free a friend who has been captured there.

When Noam Murro signed on to direct 300: Battle of Artemisia for Warner Bros. in July it left 20th Century Fox in need of a director for Die Hard 5.

At the time John Moore (Behind Enemy Lines, Max Payne) was the top contender, and now Deadline has confirmed that Moore will indeed direct Bruce Willis in his fifth outing as John McClane.

Joe Cornish (Attack the Block), Justin Lin (Fast Five) and Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) are said to have been on Fox’s wishlist, but they settled with Moore after Willis was swayed by the directors “love for the John McClane character, and his grasp of how to shoot practical, non-CGI-heavy action scenes”. Die Hard 5 will be set mostly in Russia with John McClane accompanied there by his son, and the two become drawn into a conflict with local forces.

Deadline also says Willis has been going through a similar list of names to direct the sequel to Red. As well as Willis the movie starred John Malkovich, Helen Mirren and Morgan Freeman, and is Summit Entertainment’s most successfull non-Twilight movie with $164 million worldwide made last year. The plan is for Willis to shoot Die Hard 5 first, and then move on to the Red sequel.

The site says John Moore (Behind Enemy Lines, Max Payne) “has been told that the film is essentially his to take or leave”, but nothing is confirmed at the moment. Apparently the film “will be set largely in Russia with John McClane accompanied there by his son and the two drawn into a conflict with local forces.”

During the rounds for Cop Out last year Willis said that the next outing has “got to go worldwide”. The original had Willis trapped in a skyscraper. Die Hard 2 took place in an airport. Die Hard with a Vengeance had Willis team up with Samuel L. Jackson and follow a string of deadly clues around New York City. Finally, in Live Free or Die Hard McClane had to defend the United States from some highly skilled hackers. It makes sense that the next one would go global.

The script has been written by Skip Woods (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The A-Team), but it will likely be re-written once a new director comes on-board.

While Murro directed Smart People starring Sarah Jessica Parker in 2008, he impressed Fox with his most recent campaign for the Halo video game. Plus he is a five time DGA nominated commercials director and won two Golden Lions at Cannes.

Deadline says that Bruce Willis has yet to officially sign on, but considering how vocal the actor has been about the movie he is likely to return as John McClain.

Hitman and X-Men Origins: Wolverine writer Skip Woods was hired in May to work on the script, and it is likely the ball will start rolling after a few more changes to the script.

Willis told us “Die Hard 5″ is likely to shoot next year and that a draft of the script is already complete.

“It’s probably going to happen in 2011,” he said.

“We have a script,” Willis said. “They’re making a couple changes right now.”

Last month 20th Century Fox hired Hitman and X-Men Origins: Wolverine writer Skip Woods to pen the screenplay for Die Hard 5, and back in September Green Lantern writer Michael Green was brought in to write the script for the Fantastic Four reboot.

Well now according to AICN Fox may have given both films official titles.

They aren’t the best of titles, but they get the message across, especially with the Fantastic Four reboot. With words like ‘reborn’ and ‘begins’ you know you’ve got a reboot on your hands.

Following the light and campy films Fox are aiming for a more dark and serious version of Fantastic Four, although it will be more Iron Man than The Dark Knight.

MTV pried a useful nugget out of Bruce Willis on his promotional tour for Cop Out. A fifth Die Hard film is in the works, and may film next year, according to Willis.

The star told MTV’s Josh Horowitz that he’s still happy to be involved in the mythology of John McClane, the main character of the action series, which began in 1988. He also has a few thoughts on the sequel, commenting that “it’s got to go worldwide.”

Each of the Die Hard films seems to increase in scope. The original had Willis fighting bad guys in a skyscraper. Die Hard 2 took place in an airport. Die Hard with a Vengeance had Willis team up with Samuel L. Jackson and follow a string of deadly clues around New York City. Finally, Live Free or Die Hard turned the McClane character from man to near immortal, taking down a fighter jet and defending the country from some highly skilled hackers. It makes sense that the next one would be more epic yet.

Willis also made a point that he’d like Len Wiseman, director of Live Free, to direct the fifth film. The video interview is here.
