Captain America star Dominic Cooper was once attached to an action film called Motor City, but he’s since dropped out and moved on to co-star in a crime thriller called Dead Man Down opposite Colin Farrell. Now, Variety reports Dead Man Down has just found its bad guy in another actor from the Marvel family – Iron Man star Terrence Howard.

Farrell plays the lead, a man who goes undercover in the crime syndicate responsible for killing his family. Noomi Rapace also stars as a mysterious woman who has also been harmed by the organization, and she seduces and blackmails Farrell to get what she wants. Cooper will play Farrell’s sidekick contact out in the streets, and the recently-announced Howard will star as the leader of the criminal organization, a man who doesn’t take kindly to Farrell’s plans for revenge.

I’m a huge Terrence Howard fan, and even though this movie sounds an awful lot like Scott Cooper’s upcoming Out of the Furnace, I’m a strong supporter of genre work like this when it’s done correctly. Director Niels Arden Oplev will reunite with Noomi Rapace for this film, as he directed her in the original Swedish The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo before David Fincher took a crack at an American version at the end of 2011. With a strong cast like this, I think this movie could turn out really well and hopefully we’ll start seeing a rise of high-quality revenge thrillers making their way to theaters over the next few years.

Columbia Pictures has released the first full trailer for the remake of Total Recall, directed by Len Wiseman. Replacing Arnold Schwarzenegger in the sci-fi this time around is Colin Farrell, in what looks to be a CGI-heavy spectacle, evident from the super-stylized action scenes, advanced technology, and gunplay.

As it looks, this version is going to focus more on action and less on the cheesiness of the original (although it’s still early to tell), as well as furnishing a twisted psychological mind trip of its own. With a fast-paced action packed trailer, the new Total Recall looks more than promising…. for now. The film also stars Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, John Cho, Bryan Cranston, and Bill Nighy.

I know, I know – I’m part of the problem by rewarding this “trailer for a trailer” phenomenon with coverage. But this spot announcing the upcoming Total Recall trailer (airing this Sunday) actually shows off some decent footage from the movie and gives us real first look at the way director Len Wiseman is going to translate Philip K. Dick’s story to the big screen. It shares some imagery with the 1990 Schwarzenegger version, to be sure, but surprisingly there are a lot more moments reminiscent of The 5th Element. Late last year, Warner Bros. had to pull the plug on Wedding Crashers director David Dobkin’s script for Arthur & Lancelot because the budget was more than the studio wanted to pay for a movie with no big stars in lead roles. (The film was to be led by “Game of Thrones” actor Kit Harington and new Robocop Joel Kinnaman.) Now the WB has set their sights on Colin Farrell, and his star power might be just what they need to get this movie back in business. More after the jump.

The story is a “contemporary style re-imagining” of the classic Sword and the Stone tale. Deadline says that Gary Oldman was offered the role of Merlin during the film’s earlier incarnation, but will likely be approached again now that Farrell is taking on the juicy role of Lancelot. (They’re still searching for an Arthur.) The studio had once set the release date for March of 2013, but there’s no word yet on when things are getting underway this time around.

Oldman sounds like a perfect Merlin. I was on the fence about Farrell until I saw In Bruges, but he was really great in that movie so now I’m much more interested in his future projects. I’d love to see him take on something that has the likelihood to be really high profile. Even though he’s starring in the upcoming Total Recall remake, that movie doesn’t seem to have the mainstream attention that such a classic story might garner. Horrible Bosses is now available to pre-order from Amazon on: DVD | Blu-ray

New Line and Warner Home Entertainment will release Horrible Bosses on DVD and Blu-ray October 11th, 2011, with the “Totally Inappropriate Edition” offering a new 106-minute-long extended version.

The movie, released in July, has made $170 million worldwide and stars Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, and Jason Sudekis as best buds who plot to kill each of their bosses (played by Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Spacey, and Colin Farrell).

It took over twenty-years, but this generation of horror fans finally have a cult product that they can call their own. Even though it comes in the form of a respectful remake.

Fright Night, the 105 minute remake of the 1985 classic, is pitch-perfect in so many ways. And that’s coming from someone who has seen his childhood violated twice this summer (Transformers: Dark of the Moon & The Smurfs). Thankfully, things didn’t come in threes as they say, for this is one of those rare times where a film from yester-year can actually benefit from movie-magic upgrades as long as the filmmakers are honorable to the theme of the original.

Set in a developing Las Vegas suburb – which is to say, a handful of homes in the desert – Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin) is a high school senior who lives with his milf-of-a-mother Jane (Toni Collette). Just like the original, daddy is not in the picture. Charley was once a dweeb with no shame until he started dating Amy (Imogen Poots – rough name) leading him to become neglectful of his fellow geek brethren. Specifically, his long-time best friend Evil (Christopher Mintz-Plasse).

Evil attempts to reach out to Charley when several of his classmates have gone missing. Charley is showing very little interest though, until Evil spastically tells him that a vampire is the source of the problem. A vampire, who just happens to be Charley’s next door neighbor, Jerry Dandrige (Colin Farrell). Charley eventually dismisses his former best friend’s theories and ends up meeting Jerry while the guy is flirting with his mom. He doesn’t make any assumptions, until he starts to pick-up on some quirks Jerry begins to show around him at night, based on what he knows from vampire lore.

Sensing that Charley may be on to him, Jerry decides to have a bit of fun with his prey and begins to torment Charley, and his friends, in order to keep his deadly secret. Without anyone to turn to, the only chance he has to is to seek out a famous magician in Peter Vincent (David Tennant looking like Criss Angel and Russell Brand had a baby), who apparently is the go-to guy on the legend of vampires.

If you’ve seen the original, the remake is mindful of the storytelling pattern and tone set forth. Now remember, this is a movie review and not a movie compare; so of course the special effects are wielded a bit more and the story does place the characters in a few different scenarios. These liberties taken are all vast improvements though (well, some of the CGI blood looks silly); especially the car chase sequence out on a desert highway that ushers in a killer cameo.

Now if this is one’s first introduction to Fright Night, this is a horror picture that is both campy & serious at the same time (not as dumb as Jennifer‘s Body though). For once, this tends to stay on the more serious side but it does institute a nodding homage to the original’s cheesiness. Naturally, there are the horror movie telegraphs and convenient storytelling moments (ex. Peter Vincent’s sudden change-of-heart) to make this sucker (no pun) hum along. That said, the only real complaint is how terrible the shots at night came across in 3D. The action of the camera is just fine, yet the gray coloring blends everything together. One would have to assume they were going for a realistic version of what night would look like in the desert. Nice thought…but it looked like crap in a few sequences. All things considered though, the 3D wasn’t too bad when blood splattered and vampires smoldered.

Standing ovation for Colin Farrell by the way! He is one of the coolest vampires to grace the screen in this atmosphere since Stephen Dorff in Blade. And speaking of vampire flicks, Fright Night 2011 should be this generations’ Lost Boys. It’s fun, tense and the cast plays it straight while the script timely injects comedic lines when appropriate, as it never digs into the established tone. In other words, the thrilling elements coexist nicely with the playful ones.

Overall, Fright Night is a killer vampire flick and an all-around loyal horror movie. Based on the theme of the original – along with the current filmmakers and performers knowing what kind of product they’re creating – it doesn’t try to outdo the source material, but it does sharpen the original’s fangs.

Last month we heard that Kate Beckinsale had been offered one of the lead roles in Len Wiseman’s Total Recall remake, and now Collider has confirmed that Beckinsale has officially signed on, as has Jessica Biel (The A-Team) who will play the other lead female role, Melina.

The movie ditches the Martian storyline from the original 1990 movie and instead involves nation states Euromerica and New Shanghai. Colin Farrell plays Douglas Quaid, a factory worker in New Shanghai who begins to believe he is a spy — although he doesn’t know for which side.

With filming set to begin on Monday in Toronto other cast members are being confirmed, and Heat Vision reports that Bill Nighy (Underworld, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1) will play Quatto, the leader of the resistance.

Total Recall is scheduled for released on August 3rd, 2012.

The first trailer for the remake of the 1985 cult classic Fright Night has appeared online, and it looks pretty good. This movie stars Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, David Tennant, Imogen Poots and Toni Collett, and is directed by Craig Gillespie who will soon be taking on Pride and Prejudice and Zombies for Lionsgate.

Senior Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) finally has it all—he’s running with the popular crowd and dating the hottest girl in high school. In fact, he’s so cool he’s even dissing his best friend Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse). But trouble arrives when an intriguing stranger Jerry (Colin Farrell) moves in next door. He seems like a great guy at first, but there’s something not quite right—and everyone, including Charlie’s mom (Toni Collette), doesn’t notice. After witnessing some very unusual activity, Charlie comes to an unmistakable conclusion: Jerry is a vampire preying on his neighborhood. Unable to convince anyone that he’s telling the truth, Charlie has to find a way to get rid of the monster himself in this Craig Gillespie-helmed revamp of the comedy-horror classic.

Fright Night hits August 13th, 2011.

Last month we heard several actresses, including Diane Kruger, Paula Patton, Eva Green and Eva Mendes, were in contention for two lead roles in Len Wiseman’s Total Recall remake. Now according to Deadline Wiseman has offered the role of Lori (played by Sharon Stone in the original film) to Kate Beckinsale, who also happens to be his wife.

Beckinsale is currently filming Underworld: New Dawn, but Wiseman wouldn’t have offered her the role if he knew she was busy, so she will probably be free to accept the offer.

The site also mentions Eva Mendes and Rosario Dawson are serious contenders for the other lead role, Melina, who will help Colin Farrell get to the bottom of the futuristic scandal on Mars.

The original 1990 film followed a man (Arnold Schwarzenegger) haunted by a recurring dream of journeying to Mars who buys a literal dream vacation from a company called Rekall Inc., which sells implanted memories. The man comes to believe he is a secret agent and ends up on a Martian colony, where he fights to overthrow a despotic ruler controlling the production of air.

This updated version is being described as a “new, contemporized adaptation”, so it should be quite different to what we saw 20 years ago. Kurt Wimmer (Salt) has written the screenplay, and filming will begin over the upcoming months.

While no official announcement has been made Colin Farrell is all but locked in to lead Len Wiseman’s Total Recall reboot, and Sony recently set the release date for August 3rd, 2012.

The next step is to find the leading lady, and now we can understand why Farrell signed up as Sony is currently looking for two of them. One for each planet.

From Deadline:

First, there is the role of Lori, who started out the 1990 Paul Verhoeven-directed original as the happy homemaker wife of Douglas Quaid, only to transform into the bride from hell. That’s the role that really launched the star of Sharon Stone and I’m told that Kate Bosworth and Inglourious Basterds’ Diane Kruger are reading this week for that role.

There is also the role of Melina, which was originated by Rachel Ticotin, playing the woman who helps the protagonist get to the bottom of the futuristic scandal on Mars. I’m told that Eva Mendes and Paula Patton are reading for that role. Studio insiders warn me that list is not inclusive, and I’ve heard that Jessica Biel could be in contention for Melina, Eva Green too, and that Mendes is also being considered for the Lori role.

A mix of the usual names there. I don’t think there’s been a leading lady role over the past year without Biel’s name on it. If the decision came down to me i’d go for Diane Kruger as Lori, and either Paula Patton or Eva Green for Melina. I guess we’ll find out over the next week or so which actresses land the roles.
