Hailed by Variety as a prequel to Jackie Brown, the upcoming adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s novel “The Switch” will star John Hawkes and Yassin Bey (once known as Mos Def) as younger versions of the same characters once played by Robert De Niro and Samuel L. Jackson in Tarantino’s 1997 film.

The movie, called simply Switch, was written on spec without permission by Dan Schechter (Supporting Characters), who will also direct. He sent the finished script to Elmore Leonard’s producing partner, and they gave Schechter their blessing. The plot is as follows:

Set 15 years before the events in “Jackie Brown,” story follows career criminals Ordell and Louis as they team up to kidnap Mickey Dawson, the wife of a corrupt Detroit real estate developer. When the husband refuses to pay the ransom for his wife’s return, the ex-cons are forced to reconceive their plan, and the angry housewife uses the duo to get her revenge.

Sounds like perfect casting to me. I can’t wait to see how Hawkes and Bey work together, especially using the pulpy dialogue of an Elmore Leonard story.

Though the characters are the same, this may not be a straight-ahead prequel. Leonard’s works have an interesting history of crossing over characters in both film and television. Michael Keaton reprised his Jackie Brown role of ATF agent Ray Nicolette in Steven Soderbergh’s Out of Sight, another Leonard story. And Karen Sisco, the lead character played by Jennifer Lopez in Out of Sight, was played by Carla Gugino in a short-lived TV series back in 2003. Gugino is currently reprising that role as a guest star on the FX show “Justified,” though the character does have a different last name due to different studios owning different characters in the Leonard canon.

Warner Bros. has released a second trailer for Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch which is even crazier than the first. This new trailer shows us more of the story, and a lot more of the insane sequences involving dragons, robots, huge aerial battles, and giant samurai’s.

While there, she imagines an alternative reality to hide her from the pain, and in that world, she begins planning her escape, needing to steal five objects to help get her out before she is deflowered by a vile man.

Sucker Punch will be released in March 2011 and stars Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Vanessa Hudgens, Carla Gugino, Jena Malone, and Jamie Chung.

With all the images and posters that have been released lately it was only a matter of time before Zack Snyder and Warner Bros. unleashed the trailer for Sucker Punch upon us. I would attempt to describe the footage but it is quite difficult, as you will find out. There’s dragons, robots, huge aerial battles, and a whole lot of other crazy stuff.

This trailer is actually a shortened version of what was shown at Comic-Con, but it is still awesome.

Following our first look at Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch girls last week Warner Bros. has released a bunch of new character banners which gives us a better look at the females involved.

The banners feature Emily Browning as Baby Doll, Abbie Cornish as Sweet Pea, Jena Malone as Rocket, Vanessa Hudgens as Blondie, Carla Gugino as Madam Gorski and Jamie Chung as Amber.

Actress Carla Gugino told MTV News that the rape scene in Zack Snyder’s Watchmen will be kept in the film, and it will be brutal.

“It was really brutal. It was brutal to shoot,” Gugino said of the scene, in which the Comedian (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan) attacks an young Sally Jupiter, who only manages to avoid getting raped by the timely intervention of fellow mask Hooded Justice. “That was one of the things [director] Zack [Snyder] said to me from the start: ‘I really want this to be incredibly brutal. It’s not a turn-on kind of story. It’s bad.’ It’s important that we did that. I think hopefully it will be really powerful.”

A brutal rape scene is not anything new, as I am sure all rapes are brutal. That’s why they are called rapes. Although, the big news here is that the scene will be kept in the movie and it will be the first rape scene in a comic book movie.

No matter how uncomfortable, however, it’s ultimately a scene that really HAS to be in the film, Gugino said, since it influences so much of what comes after: Sally’s retirement from crimefighting, her self-image as a sex-symbol, and, of course, her second, consensual, sexual encounter with the Comedian later on.

“It’s so informative of so many things thematically in the movie and certainly in the graphic novel, not only for this character but for the Comedian and ultimately [her daughter] Laurie,” Gugino said. “Many things stem from that particular situation.”
