Date movie The Vow has the best chances to claim the top spot with Star Wars and Safe House fighting for 2nd place. Sequel Journey 2: The Mysterious Island should come in 4th.

Now we might be in for a strong weekend at the box office but at least according to critics The Phantom Menace is all eye candy with no substance, The Vow is shallow, Safe House is uninspired, and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is, and I quote: “aggressively unambitious”. But then again, what do they know, right? Chances are there’s something for everyone this weekend.

The Vow is looking to replicate the success of Dead John, a movie released 2 years ago starring the same Channing Tatum and opening with $30.4 million. Then there’s Rachel McAdams and she’s been in quite a few hits. With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, I guess couples will boost this to around $30 million, more than enough for the top spot.

For 2nd place I’m split between Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace and Safe House. For Star Wars we have to keep in mind that there’s still a generation out there that grew up with Cartoon Network’s Clone Wars series, one that never experienced Star Wars in theaters. They should be part of the driving force behind The Phantom Menace. Now Safe House stars Denzel Washington and that’s more than enough for an opening north of $20 million. As an added bonus we get Ryan Reynolds in what should be at the very least a cool action flick. I’m thinking both should gross $22-23 million over the weekend.

Journey to the Center of the Earth opened in 2008 with $21 million and went on to gross $101.7 million, becoming one of the surprise hits of that year. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is the sequel to that flick and while it lacks one Brendan Fraser, it certainly makes up for that with Dwayne Johnson, while Josh Hutcherson acts as the only familiar face returning. Four years ago digital 3D was still a new thing, today it’s everywhere so I can’t see this sequel replicating the success of the original. Maybe $17 million over the weekend, 4th place.

Rounding out the top 5, Chronicle should beat The Woman in Black again with around $11 million for a 10 day total of $38 million. That’s already more than twice the $15 million reported budget.

Next week is Valentine’s Day and Fox brings in the heavy guns with McG’s This Means War, Sony unleash Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, while Disney brings to the states the latest Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away) animated flick, The Secret World of Arrietty.

Read similar posts to Box Office Forecast: The Vow takes on Star Wars and Safe House at Filmonic

International Box Office: Ghost Protocol reaches new heights

Movie News

Box Office

Chronicle

International Box Office

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

La Verite si je Mens! 3

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol

Underworld: Awakening

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol passed the $600 million mark last week and thanks to that it’s now the all time highest grossing spy flick worldwide as well as Tom Cruise’s biggest yet, besting War of the Worlds, unadjusted for inflation. Besides that we have a new French comedy making the rounds, more after the break.

Ghost Protocol was number one again, making this the 5th time since its opening. With $24.3 million last weekend, the spy movie is at $424.3 million internationally and a whopping $629.8 million worldwide. That’s more than the previous biggest spy flick, Casino Royale ($594.2M) and it looks like it can still push a few millions more and probably overtake Kung Fu Panda 2 ($665.7M) to become the 5th highest grosser of 2011 worldwide.

In 2nd place we have French comedy La Verite si je Mens! 3 with $14.7 million. Now as the name suggest, this is the 3rd entry in a series that started back in 1997. I have no idea how much the first one made but I can tell you that according to wikipedia, the 2nd one (2002) sold 7.7 million tickets (that’s actual butts in seats), so quite a lot. For reference, last year’s huge hit Intouchables also opened with $14.7 million but went on to gross $161.1 million in France (2nd ever). Don’t expect this movie to make even a quarter of that freakishly large number.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island was 3rd with $14.1 million for a total of $41.5 million. Now this flick has been slowly lurking around the world for a few weeks now, ahead of its US opening this Friday. As you can see, it’s doing quite well around the world so far.

Found footage superhero flick Chronicle is 4th with an opening of $12.6 million in 32 countries. It’s not going to break any records but it should pull a good $70-80 million internationally for a strong $140 million worldwide by the end of its run, give or take a few millions.

Rounding out the top 5 was Underworld Awakening with $11.5 million which means $58 million internationally, a series best, as well as $109.3 million worldwide, 2nd best behind only Underworld: Evolution‘s with ($111.3M). Awakening should make at least $50 million more around the world before the end of its run, maybe good enough to green light a 5th Underworld flick.

Read similar posts to International Box Office: Ghost Protocol reaches new heights at Filmonic

Box Office: Chronicle takes Super Bowl weekend

Movie News

Big Miracle

Box Office

Box Office Results

Chronicle

The Grey

The Woman in Black

Underworld: Awakening

It was a close race last weekend at the box office with both Chronicle and The Woman in Black scoring over $20 million on their debuts, thus beating even the most optimistic expectations. Not the same could be said about Big Miracle, the return of Drew Barrymore, opening below expectations.

Chronicle ranked 1st over the Super Bowl weekend with $22 million, which is the 5th highest opening weekend ever for a found footage flick. Among superhero movies it’s a respectable 39th place, quite a feat for an original property. Made for just $15 million, Chronicle could go on to gross $60 million or so in North America. With such numbers there’s a good chance we might see a sequel in the not so distant future, we’re talking about Fox after all.

The Woman in Black opened to $20.8 million, enough to rank 1st a week ago, now only 2nd behind Chronicle. Among period horrors, The Woman in Black had the 8th highest debut and could finish somewhere between $50 and 55 million in North America. It was a very cheap movie to acquire for CBS Films so they must be ecstatic to finally have a hit on their hands. Also Daniel Radcliffe might be packing some box office muscles after all.

In 3rd place we have former leader The Grey with $9.3 million and $35.3 million after 11 days. Compared to past Liam Neeson action flicks Taken ($54.9 million in 11 days) and Unknown ($43.8 million in 11 days), The Grey is running way behind and I seriously doubt it can go higher than $60 million in North America at this point. Fortunately, with a $25 million price tag The Grey is still very much a hit.

Big Miracle, the last new wide release of the week, opened in 4th place with a disappointing $7.7 million take. Not a good sign for actress Drew Barrymore that, according to Box Office Mojo, has a wide release opening average of $12 million. On a brighter note, it does rank higher than the $6.8 million opening of her last effort, comedy Going the Distance.

Rounding out the top 5 was Underworld Awakening with $5.5 million for $54.8 million after 18 days. It’s running a good $1.4 million ahead of Underworld: Evolution at the same point in its run so it should end up higher than the $62.3 million made by that, meaning a new series high, unadjusted for inflation.

Read similar posts to Box Office: Chronicle takes Super Bowl weekend at Filmonic

Chronicle and The Woman in Black fight for Super Bowl Weekend

Movie News

Big Miracle

Box Office

Box Office Predictions

Chronicle

The Grey

The Woman in Black

Underworld: Awakening

Found footage superhero flick Chronicle is poised to open on top over the Super Bowl Weekend in North America, but Daniel Radcliffe’s first movie since finishing the Harry Potter series, horror The Woman in Black, could upset that order. Also Drew Barrymore returns to the big screen after almost two years of absence in Big Miracle.

There’s something about the found footage sub-genre that gets people into theaters. Just a month ago we had The Devil Inside open with $33.7 million and that has made $52.8 million so far, now we have another. Fortunately Chronicle is not another horror since I think we’ve had more than enough of those. It’s more Cloverfield than Paranormal Activity, and while the later proved to be more successful, Cloverfield was no slouch either. Chronicle is a superhero origin tale and while the premise will undoubtedly attract people, we have to keep in mind that Sunday is Super Bowl and that should hit the movie’s weekend total pretty hard. I’m going to say $18 million for first place.

My second place pick is another film opening today, The Woman in Black. The novel spawned a very successful stage play which has been running in London since 1989, a year which also saw a TV movie made. Now we have Daniel Radcliffe in the lead for his first real box office test outside the Harry Potter franchise. Can his name alone make this a hit? Unfortunately I have to answer that question with another question. What is a hit? You see, distributor CBS Films paid $3 million to acquire The Woman in Black so I recon anything above a $10 million opening should be fine for them. I’m in a good mood today so I’ll say $15 million for The Woman in Black.

Big Miracle represents the perfect counter-programming for the other two releases mentioned above. It’s a PG family flick about whales. Just three months ago Dolphin Tale, another marine mammal movie, made quite a splash at the box office with a $19.1 million opening. But don’t expect such a debut from Big Miracle for at least two reasons: fewer theaters and no overpriced 3D. What Big Miracle will have going for itself is a bigger Sunday than the rest of the movies above. I’m thinking $12 million for 3rd place.

In 4th place we should find former leader The Grey with $10 million for a total of $35 million after 10 days. Rounding up the top 5 might be Underworld Awakening with $6 million and more than $54 million after 17 days.

Next week Dwayne Johnson replaces Brendan Fraser in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island for another Jules Verne adapted adventure, Ryan Reynolds tries to keep Denzel Washington alive in Safe House, we go back to a galaxy far far away in the 3D re-release of Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace, and Channing Tatum has to win the heart of Rachel McAdams again in The Vow.

Read similar posts to Chronicle and The Woman in Black fight for Super Bowl Weekend at Filmonic

International Box Office: Mission: Impossible returns to the top

Movie News

Box Office

International Box Office

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol

Puss in Boots

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

The Descendants

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

Underworld: Awakening

After three consecutive weekends won by Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, it’s finally time to welcome a new leader. Actually, new is not the correct word here. The movie in question is Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, the 4th entry in the long-running series of spy films starring Tom Cruise.

A most impressive debut in China ($13.5 million) sent Ghost Protocol back to the top with $25.2 million from 56 countries. The latest Ethan Hunt adventure has now amassed $377.5 million internationally for a worldwide total of $580.3 million, a new record for the Mission: Impossible franchise, besting the $546.4 million of Mission: Impossible 2 (2000) sometime last week. It should ultimately pass Fast Five ($626.1M) and become the 6th highest grossing movie of 2011 worldwide.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows was obviously 2nd and not so obviously with $18.1 million ($18.3 million a week before). That’s a hefty $294 million internationally and $476.3 million worldwide. It’s still on track to beat the $524 million made by Sherlock Holmes and it could go a good couple of millions above since it has a Japan opening in March (the original made $22.5 million over there).

Underworld Awakening is a strong 3rd with $16 million and $40.3 million internationally so far. That means the vampire-werewolf flick (that’s not Twilight) is at $86.2 million worldwide. It will pass both the original Underworld ($95.7 million) and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans ($91.4 million) sometime this week while Underworld: Evolution ($111.3 million) will fall next week. Underworld Awakening is on track to finish above $160 million worldwide, a good number that should cover the $70 million budget and might even green light a 5th entry.

The Descendants expanded to a few new countries last weekend so it made $15.9 million, 4th place and $27.8 million internationally for $86.9 million worldwide. The recently 5-time Oscar nominated flick should become director Alexander Payne’s highest grossing film to date. In the past he’s done successful movies like Sideways ($109.7 million) and About Schmidt ($105.8 million).

Rounding up the top 5 is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo with $11.2 million for $87.1 million internationally and $185.4 million worldwide. Moving forward with the sequel might have looked like a risky decision a few weeks ago but now it’s starting to make sense.

Finally Puss in Boots added $7.5 million for $359.7 million internationally and passed the fabled $500 million mark with $506.8 million worldwide making it the 8th highest grosser for DreamWorks Animation. Made for just $130 million (compared to the animation norm of $150-200 million), Puss in Boots turned out to be a spectacular success for DreamWorks and we might just see a sequel sometime in the future.

Read similar posts to International Box Office: Mission: Impossible returns to the top at Filmonic

Box Office: The Grey opens at #1

Movie News

Box Office

Box Office Results

Man On A Ledge

One for the Money

Red Tails

The Grey

Underworld: Awakening

The Grey, starring Liam Neeson with some other dudes and a pack of wolves, opened in 1st place over the weekend with little in the way of competition. Fellow action flick Man on a Ledge only managed 5th place even with its PG-13 rating while action-comedy One for the Money, in 3rd, marked Katherine Heigl’s worst opening in 6 years.

Liam Neeson showed his box office muscle once again in The Grey, an R-rated man-versus-nature action flick that opened with $19.6 million, more than enough to secure the top spot. Among Liam Neeson’s last action efforts, The Grey sports a softer debut then the likes of Taken ($24.7M), The A-Team ($25.6M) and Unknown ($21.8 million), but those had PG-13 ratings which certainly helped. Based on its opening and how I think the next couple of weeks will run, The Grey should finish around $65-70 million in North America. Great news for a $20 million film.

In 2nd place former leader Underworld Awakening had the best 2nd weekend in the series history with $12.3 million. That brings its total to $44.9 million in 10 days, running ahead of Underworld: Evolution‘s $44.6 million after 10 days. This means Underworld Awakening is also on track for $65-70 million when all will be said and done.

Katherine Heigl’s One for the Money was 3rd with $11.5 million, a disappointing debut for her. With a budget of $40 million and a 3% Rotten Tomato rating, this is one stinker Lionsgate will definitely shove under the rug soon enough. Can’t see this finishing above $25 million in North America.

In 4th place holdover Red Tails made $10.3 million, a decent 44.8% drop from last week. With $33.7 million in 10 days, Red Tails will most likely run out of fuel before it can reach $50 million.

Rounding up the top 5 is newcomer Man on a Ledge and with just $8 million over the weekend, you could start to feel like jumping from a ledge once you take into consideration the high $42 million price tag of the flick. Although I recommend a ledge that’s not to far from the ground, we don’t want any serious injuries. Regarding Sam Worthington, he hasn’t had a hit since Clash of the Titans way back in April 2010 so he probably can’t wait for Wrath of the Titans to come out in just two months from now.

Read similar posts to Box Office: The Grey opens at #1 at Filmonic

Box Office Analysis: Liam Neeson

Movie News

Batman Begins

Box Office

Clash Of The Titans

Darkman

Gangs of New York

Kingdom of Heaven

Liam Neeson

Love Actually

Schindler's List

Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace

Taken

The A-Team

The Chronicles of Narnia

The Haunting

Unknown

William John Neeson was born June 7th, 1952 in Northern Ireland. In 1981 he made his debut in Excalibur with a very small part, and 12 years later he won the role of Oskar Schindler in Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List which put him firmly on the map.

He’s had important roles in many of his films but very rarely played the lead. That changed in 2009 with Taken, a movie that turned him from a mentor that often died (*SPOILERS* Batman Begins, Gangs of New York, Kingdom of Heaven, Star Wars) to a bonafide badass in subsequent films such Unknown, The A-Team, and now in The Grey and the upcoming Taken sequel, although he is going back to mentor mode in Battleship this year.

Today we take a look at Liam Neeson’s top 10 biggest box office hits in North America, unadjusted.

I’ll start with a bit of a disclaimer first, after a long debate between me and myself, I’ve decided to include the first film in the Chronicles of Narnia series where Liam Neeson voices the lion Aslan (even though Box Office Mojo won’t). The subsequent movies won’t be featured here because his part in them became much shorter.

10. Unknown (2011) $63.6 million – An engaging thriller about a man that loses his identity after a car accident. So what do you do when not even your wife recognizes you? Well, to find out you have to watch Unknown and trust me, it’s not a waste of time.

9. The A-Team (2010) $77.2 million – A fun action flick based on the popular 80′s hit TV series. It’s a bit light on brain cells but definitely makes up for that with great action set pieces. Don’t listen to the haters out there, give it a try, there’s nothing wrong with some brainless fun now and again.

8. Gangs of New York (2002) $77.8 million – Martin Scorsese’s epic about the gang wars in 19th century New York. Liam Neeson plays Leonardo DiCaprio’s dad in the film, a short yet pivotal part. I said it before, I’ll say it again, Gangs of New York is a must see.

7. The Haunting (1999) $91.4 million – I remember being so hyped for this back in 1999, although I can’t remember exactly why. Probably a combination of the previews and the general premise of the film. If The Grey is Liam Neeson against wolves, The Haunting was him against ghosts, with a twist thrown for good measure.

6. Schindler’s List (1993) $96 million – The story of a true superhero for over 1100 people and winner of 7 Oscars in 1994 including Best Picture and Best Director for Steven Spielberg. Liam Neeson had to settle for a nomination only. Schindler’s List is not an easy film to watch but if you can (and you should), it’s definitely worth every second of those 3 hours and 15 minutes.

5. Taken (2009) $145 million – One of the great action flicks of the last few years, for me at least, up there with the likes of Casino Royale and The Bourne Ultimatum. After grossing little over $80 million internationally over the course of 2008, the film finally opened in the US in January 2009. By that time it was already available on Blu-ray and DVD in many countries around the world yet Taken opened with $24.7 million during the Super Bowl Weekend and went on to gross $145 million, becoming one of the biggest surprise hits of that year. In October Fox will release a completely unnecessary sequel that I’ll probably end up watching opening night.

4. Clash of the Titans (2010) $163.2 million – Liam Neeson makes for a great Zeus here but everything else is just average at best. Suffice to say, in March I won’t be catching Wrath of the Titans on opening night.

3. Batman Begins (2005) $2005.3 million – How awesome was Liam Neeson here, right? Now this is obviously a fantastic movie, my favorite of the Nolan Batman flicks actually and having Liam Neeson return in The Dark Knight Rises makes me scream like a teenage girl at a Justin Bieber concert.

2. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005) $291.7 million – So Aslan being a metaphor for God here, there’s no surprise that Liam Neeson’s deep gravelly voice was a perfect fit. Based on C. S. Lewis’ famous children novel, the movie became a massive success for Disney but none of the sequels that followed managed to recreate the same magic or box office numbers. It’s a great family movie, a must have in any DVD or Blu-ray collection.

1. Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace (1999) $431 million – The film Star Wars fans love to hate. I was 12 when I saw this in theaters and at the time I can say that I enjoyed myself, it was a good time at the movies. Today I can see why some hate The Phantom Menace so much (Jar Jar, you devil you) but I personally still can’t join their ranks. I can’t help myself, it might not be a great movie but it’s certainly not a bad one either, for me at least.

Finally a movie that didn’t make this top 10 but certainly would make my personal one, Kingdom of Heaven. A great movie even thought Liam Neeson had a rather short part. Then there’s also Love Actually, great date movie, definitely one his best. Also he was rather badass in Sam Raimi’s Darkman way back in 1990. So what’s your favorite Liam Neeson film?

Read similar posts to Box Office Analysis: Liam Neeson at Filmonic

Box Office Forecast: The Grey set to top a slow weekend

Movie News

Box Office

Box Office Predictions

Hugo

Man On A Ledge

One for the Money

Red Tails

The Artist

The Descendants

The Grey

Underworld: Awakening

After the huge success of Taken three years ago, Liam Neeson became something of a beginning of the year go-to star, sort of. He’s had Unknown open to good numbers last year in February and I’m guessing distributor Open Road Films expects similar results from this year’s The Grey. Also new are Summit Entertainment’s Man on a Ledge and Lionsgate’s One for the Money.

The Grey opens today in 3185 theaters and is the movie to beat. Now if this didn’t have Liam Neeson I’d probably give it $8 million or so but thanks to the 59 year old actor, everything changes. For the past three years, with the exception of The Next Three Days (small role anyway), all Liam Neeson’s live-action wide releases have opened above $20 million and while most expect $14-18 million from The Grey, I’m going a bit higher with $22 million. I know it’s R-rated (Taken and Unknown were both PG-13) but reviews are great (75% on Rotten Tomatoes) and Liam Neeson has become quite a box office draw in the past few years.

In 2nd place we should see former leader Underworld Awakening with $12 million, bringing its total to $44.5 million after 10 days, neck-a-neck with Underworld: Evolution‘s $44.6 million after 10 days.

Newcomer One for the Money will be 3rd. This is an action-comedy starring Katherine Heigl and Jason O’Mara (Terra Nova) based on a best-selling novel by Janet Evanovich. Fans of the book might help this film but that won’t be enough for it to go higher than $11 million. For Katherine Heigl this could be her worst opening flick in 6 years. For reference, her wide openings average $15.4 million according to Box Office Mojo. Also, doesn’t this look a bit too much like The Bounty Hunter?

In 4th place Red Tails could reach $10 million but looking at its weekdays, a lower number makes more sense. That will mean $33 million in 10 days and rather slim chances for the flick to reach $50 million at the end of its run in North America. Very disappointing after such a promising opening.

We finally come around to 5th place and the last new release of the weekend, Man on a Ledge. Sam Worthington, Elizabeth Banks, Jamie Bell and Ed Harris star in this familiar looking thriller. Now Sam Worthington has had success with flicks like Terminator: Salvation, Avatar and Clash of the Titans, but that doesn’t make him a box office draw, not yet anyway. Man on a Ledge just doesn’t look interesting so I’m only gonna give it $8 million.

As you all might know, on Tuesday the Academy Awards nominations were announced and that was certainly good publicity for the flicks getting a best picture nod. Today we’ve got The Descendants (5 nominations), Hugo (11) and The Artist (10) all expanding but the only one with any chance to reach the top 10 is George Clooney’s The Descendants in 1997 theaters.

Next weekend is in February already and we’ve got Universal’s Big Miracle, Fox’s Chronicles and Harry Potter’s The Woman in Black opening.

Read similar posts to Box Office Forecast: The Grey set to top a slow weekend at Filmonic

Box Office Analysis: Tom Hanks

Movie News

Angels & Demons

Apollo 13

Big

Box Office

Cast Away

Catch Me if You Can

Forrest Gump

Saving Private Ryan

Sleepless in Seattle

The Da Vinci Code

The Green Mile

Tom Hanks

Toy Story

Toy Story 2

Toy Story 3

Besides Sandra Bullock, the newly Oscar nominated Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close also stars Tom Hanks. Now he might not have had the best couple of years but he is still frigging Tom Hanks. The legendary actor, producer, writer, and director has been around for over 30 years, so quite a career. Since he is just as much an international star (and has been for a long time) we’re going to count his top 10 biggest box office hits worldwide, unfortunately unadjusted for inflation.

10. Catch Me if You Can (2002) $352.1 million – Directed by Steven Spielberg and also starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Frank Abagnale Jr., a teen that successfully conned millions of dollars worth of checks. Tom Hanks plays the FBI agent assigned to catch Frank. Catch Me if You Can is great film from start to finish, never boring, definitely worth your time.

9. Apollo 13 (1995) $353.5 million – Tom Hanks plays Jim Lovell in this Ron Howard film about the true story of the troubled Apollo 13 mission. Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise, Kevin Bacon and Ed Harris also star in this great movie.

8. Toy Story (1995) $362 million – The first big screen feature film of now famous animation studio Pixar, Toy Story is a wonderful movie that answers a simple question: What happens with your toys when there’s no one around? I was 8 when I first saw this in theaters and 23 when I last saw it at home. Still a great movie regardless of age. Tom Hanks voices the lovable cowboy Woody and two more equally fantastic sequels followed over the next 15 years.

7. Cast Away (2000) $429.6 million – “Wilson! Wilson!” Screams that, 11 years later, I still remember. Wilson is a Wilson Sporting Goods volleyball and Tom Hanks’ co-star in the movie Cast Away. It sounds crazy if you haven’t seen the film, I know, but Wilson really was for Tom Hank’s character, Chuck, what Friday was for Robinson Crusoe. This is obviously a castaway story and for fear of not spoiling anything else, I’ll stop here by saying that you simply must watch Cast Away.

6. Saving Private Ryan (1998) $481.8 million – A World War 2 epic set during the invasion of Normandy, it tells the story of a group of soldiers lead by Captain John H. Miller (Tom Hanks) and their search for private James Francis Ryan (Matt Damon), the last surviving of four brothers. Directed by Steven Spielberg, it’s one of the best war movies of all time, in my opinion.

5. Toy Story 2 (1999) $485 million – Often enough sequels don’t live up to expectations but that wasn’t the case with Toy Story 2, considered by some actually superior. Personally, I’m split here; it’s like having to choose between your kids. So again, Woody, Buzz and the rest of Andy’s toys return for a new adventure.

4. Angels & Demons (2009) $485.9 million – Based on the Dan Brown mystery novel with the same name, Angels & Demons is a prequel to The Da Vinci Code and a superior flick in every way. Ron Howard directs Tom Hanks again here.

3. Forrest Gump (1994) $677.4 million – A fantastic movie that won Tom Hanks his second Oscar, Forest Gump is based on the novel with the same name by Winston Groom. While not the smartest tool in the shed, Forest Gump lived quite a life, he taught a young Elvis how to dance, became part of the All-American Collage Football Team, meet John F. Kennedy, joined the army, fought in Vietnam, received the Medal of Honor, meet another president (Lyndon B. Johnson), played ping-pong for the US Army Team against China, meet yet another president (Richard Nixon) and so on. Directed by Robert Zemeckis (Cast Away), Forest Gump is a phenomenal movie that can’t be missed by anyone.

2. The Da Vinci Code (2006) $758.2 million – Now this is a movie you can miss. It’s the very definition of how to spoil a good premise with a mediocre and boring movie. Yeah sure, it’s controversial and stuff but is that enough? If so then go right ahead, The Da Vinci Code is not a bad movie but I’m certainly not one to recommend it.

1. Toy Story 3 (2010) $1,063.2 million – 11 years worth of expectations and Toy Story 3 did not disappoint one bit. The end of a trilogy and a series, at least until rumors of Toy Story 4 started circling. You know, Pixar hasn’t failed us yet, why start now, Cars 2 be damned.

Two Oscars and five Golden Globes later, there are many other noteworthy Tom Hanks movies that didn’t make this top 10 but only two of those have a special spot in my heart. One is The Green Mile, a superb film based on the Stephen King novel of the same name. The other is Sleepless in Seattle, a heart-warming film just as great now as it was 19 years ago. Now that I think about it, I really love Big also. So what’s your favorite Tom Hanks film? Meanwhile The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo continues to perform well in 2nd place and Underworld Awakening looks like it could leave its predecessors in the dust when it comes to international box office.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows made another $18.1 million last weekend for a decent looking $261 million international take so far. Once we add the US gross, a worldwide total of $439.3 million comes up. Using a bit of creative forecasting based on how the movie is performing right now, I’d say A Game of Shadows should finish with $540-550 million worldwide, slightly higher than the original ($524M).

In 2nd place The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo collected $15.7 million for $70.8 million internationally. Worldwide the number is $165.3 million and since this movie cost $90 million to make, I’d say Sony still need a bit more to cover it. I think moving forward with The Girl Who Played with Fire is a good idea as long as they can lower the budget to something like $60-70 million.

Underworld: Awakening opened in 36 countries and generated $13.4 million. The movies still has a lot of big markets ahead so the series best of $49 million internationally made by Underworld: Evolution should be well within reach. Actually I recon Underworld: Awakening could double that number thanks to 3D, IMAX and a good 6 years of ticket price inflation.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol was 4th with $9.4 million for $336.7 million internationally and $534 million worldwide, just $12 million shy of the $546.4 million made by Mission: Impossible 2. That’s obviously unadjusted since adjusted for ticket price inflation would probably have Mission: Impossible 2 closer to a billion, way out of reach for Ghost Protocol.

Finally rounding up the top 5 is Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked with $9.3 million. That means Alvin and his gang are at $169.6 million internationally and $294.2 million worldwide. Made on a $75 million budget, it more then covered that. As far as I know there’s no Alvin and the Chipmunks 4 confirmed but if they do make another one, please, PLEASE, stop with the stupid titles like The Squeakquel or Chipwrecked, come on!

Read similar posts to International Box Office: Sherlock Holmes leads for 3rd straight weekend at Filmonic
