Dark and moody. The transformation scenes look quite cool too, and I’m glad they look nothing like what we saw in Van Helsing. Assuming they don’t push it back again, it looks like we will have a decent monster movie on our hands come February.

Yesterday we heard that Universal had pushed The Wolfman’s release date back once again from November 6th 2009 to February 12th 2010, and there was talk that recent reshooting was to blame. However, Universal have now commented on why they decided to delay the hairy one, and revealed that we will be getting a trailer in a few weeks!

From ShockTillYouDrop:

I’ll start with the good stuff. You’re going to see a trailer sooner than later. Attached to Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds on August 21st, in fact.

I’ve spoken to my reps at Universal and have been informed the release shift had much to do with box office potential.

In its November 6th slot, the Joe Johnston film would have been going up against Disney’s A Christmas Carol, whereas in February it faces little competition (although The Cabin in the Woods opens one week earlier). Futhermore, from a marketing standpoint, Universal wanted to ensure all of the FX were complete so they could use them in the ad campaign.

So not only will we get a trailer for The Wolfman, August 21st is also the day we will get a trailer for James Cameron’s Avatar!

If you can’t wait that long to see Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro and Hugo Weaving in action, Back in May we heard that they were adding more action scenes which included “a fight scene between two werewolves involving a fair amount of CG with them going up the walls and other bits of business”. Now according to The Daily Mail stunt supervisor Vic Armstrong and the cast have spent six weeks shooting more scenes which “saw a tougher, fiercer creature bounding around – and ready to attack on all fours.”

The 30 million dollar question for The Wolf Man was whether it walks like a man on its hind legs or like a wolf on all four. Plus, the supposedly frightening creature looked too cuddly, which was no good for a gothic horror movie starring Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins and Emily Blunt. ‘The Wolf was on its heels and it looked daft,’ an actor involved in the movie told me.

Vic came up with a great confrontation between the Wolf Man and the Werewolf. They really go after each other and it’s dramatic and exciting, whereas the stuff they shot first time round was limp.

‘The two stunt guys inside the costumes were exhausted, as Vic just had them doing the scene again and again until he was happy’, one of the crew who worked on the film at Pinewood Studios told me.

Benicio Del Toro flew to the UK for the re-shoots, Emily Blunt was, by that time, working on Gulliver’s Travels so was only available for three or four weekends, and Anthony Hopkins couldn’t return to London so he did his additional filming in LA.

Last night Universal confirmed that additional sequences were shot. ‘The full articulation of the transformational lead character will be realised when the film is completed and we are excited to share his incredible look with the world in the upcoming trailer’.

Johnston has been back in LA for the past five weeks overseeing the special effects and computer-generated images for the Universal film.

I guess we can’t really say which looks better, 2 legs or 4, as we haven’t seen anything yet. There was the Comic Con trailer from last year, but apart from that Universal haven’t got round to marketing it. I hope we get the trailer sooner rather than later because i’m getting tired of watching the blurred cam quality Con trailer to fulfil my Wolfman craving!
<ul

The first stills we have got from the movie look amazing. You can see one in this post. However, Rick Baker has told MTV that he is not happy with the plans to have the transformation from man to wolf be done with CGI, and not his amazing make up effects.

“[CGI] can be really great, and I think it’s a great tool. But I think we should have been more involved with makeup in the transformation,” he sighed. “Because, basically, we aren’t involved with the transformation at this point. Which is one of the more fun things to do in a movie.”

“At this point, nothing’s really been done [that is permanent],” Baker said of the April 3rd film, which also stars Anthony Hopkins and Emily Blunt. “So, I’m lobbying to be part of that; I’ve been talking to the producers and saying ‘It’s my creation in the end, there’s a certain logic in the design of it. I know it’s different between Benicio’s face and the wolf face, because I sculpted that face. I know how the anatomy changes; I should at least be giving some guidance to the guys who are doing [the transformation in CGI].”

“I know what the changes are, I know what they should be; I’ve done this. I kind of changed the way transformations were done in films with “American Werewolf,” and I’d like to have a chance.”

Did the producers not see Van Helsing!? I know the effects will have advanced since 2004 but surely the master of make up should have a say in the transformation and not be let in the dark. He created the damn wolf face!

In other Wolfman news, the official website is up and can be seen by clicking the image below!
<p
