Universal Pictures today released the second official trailer for Battleship, the movie based on Hasbro’s naval combat board game starring Taylor Kitsch, Brooklyn Decker, Alexander Skarsgård, Rihanna and Liam Neeson.

From the trailer it’s clear director Peter Berg, Universal, and the marketing team have been very much influenced by Michael Bay’s Transformers franchise. It sounds, feels, and looks just like the first Transformers movie, which was probably Universal’s aim as that ended up spawning a billion dollar franchise.

Universal Pictures has today released the first official trailer for Battleship, the movie based on Hasbro’s naval combat board game.

People seem to have been against this movie from the beginning, mainly because it’s based on a board game. The casting of models and singers in lead roles suggested they weren’t taking the movie seriously, and from the looks of this trailer neither should we.

With each casting announcement for Peter Berg’s Battleship we get a better idea about what type of movie it will be. At the moment it looks like a $200 million dollar music video. Taylor Kitsch and Alexander Skarsgard are part of a new breed of upcoming actors with Kitsch leading John Carter of Mars for Disney and Skarsgard narrowly missing out on playing Thor, so I can understand why they were given leading roles.

But then Pop/R&B singer Rihanna was cast last month, and now according to Latino Review Victoria Secret model Brooklyn Decker has landed the role of Taylor Kitsch’s love interest. Apparently no actual actresses are required for this movie.

Brooklyn Decker was on the short list of models Michael Bay considered to replace Megan Fox in Transformers 3, a role that went to Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. There have been many models who have made a career out of acting, and good for them, I just prefer trained actresses winning roles instead of T and A who look good on movie posters.

In the script an international fleet joins together to battle a water-bound armada of alien invaders. Skarsgard will play Kitsch’s brother, a straight and narrow naval officer whom Kitsch, a wildly spirited naval officer, idolizes.

The release date is currently set for June 18, 2012, with filming set to begin this month in Hawaii.

No word on who Rihanna will be playing, although it doesn’t really matter. Director Peter Berg hasn’t cast her because she suits a particular role. Rihanna was likely hired for marketing purposes.

It was only a few months ago that we were hearing Alexander Skarsgard’s name being thrown around as a possible contender to play Thor, but the role eventually went to Chris Hemsworth. However, there will still be a Skarsgard in Thor. Stellan Skarsgard, Alexander’s father, recently revealed that he had joined the cast to Swedish site Ystads Allehanda:

Stellan Skarsgård is ready for a role in action movie “Thor.”

Everything is still secret about the project and Skarsgård can not reveal what role he will play.

“They wanted me to sign without reading the script. That I refused to do. Then they sent one to me that was so coded that I could only print one copy,” said Stellan Skarsgård to TT spectra.

Stellan is probably best known for playing Bootstrap Bill in two Pirates of the Caribbean films. He also had a role in Angels and Demons earlier this year. No word on who he will be playing in Thor, although we do know he will be joining Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman and Samuel L. Jackson and filming is expected to begin early next year.

Alexander Skarsgard was on the list of potential Thor’s. He met with director Kenneth Branagh and even held the hammer, however last month Marvel decided that Chris Hemsworth was their man. MTV got the chance to speak to him about it, and while he is obviously a bit disappointed, meeting with the Marvel guys may land him a different role in the future:

“Yeah, I met with [Marvel Studios chief] Kevin [Feige] a few times and the director [Kenneth Branagh],” the affable Skarsgard admitted when asked about rumors that he was one of the last people cut before Chris Hemsworth was chosen to play the Norse god of thunder. “There was definitely some truth in that, yeah.”

The casting process got so far along, in fact, that Skarsgard — who plays Eric Northman, a secretive vampire Sheriff on “True Blood” — even filmed an audition in the complete Thor costume, hammer and all.

“Yeah,” he remembered of slipping into the hero’s threads. “That was pretty fun.”

But, even though he ultimately lost the role to Hemsworth, Skarsgard told me that he’ll keep an open mind and remain hopeful to someday land another comic-book-based role. And, since Feige has made recent statements saying that the people he met during the “Thor” auditions could be brought back for other Marvel roles, we might still see him in Spandex and a cowl someday.

“It depends on the circumstances,” Skarsgard said of possible roles in “Captain America” or beyond. “It’s pretty hard to say [whether I’d take another comic role]. It depends on the circumstances – who the director is, and what the character is. But of course [I’d be interested in looking into it]. I think it’s every little boy’s dream; it would be a person’s dream to play an action hero.”

I think Marvel made the right decision, however it must have been a touch choice as I could easily see Skarsgard in the role.

Two weeks ago we crossed Channing Tatum off the list of actors who were in the running to play Thor, now it could be time to cross Alexander Skarsgard’s name off that list too. Skarsgard has been rumored ever since he was spotted having lunch with director Kenneth Branagh last month.

During an interview about True Blood with The Fifth Letter of the Alphabet, Skarsgard was asked point blank whether or not he will be playing Thor. “No, I don’t think so,” the actor replied. “I haven’t gotten the call, so…”

Now I know that isn’t much quoting to go on, but I have narrowed what this could mean down to a few points:

1) They’ve lost his number
2) They haven’t decided who they want play Thor yet, hence not calling
3) They haven’t called because they’ve found another 6ft+ blonde haired dude who they prefer

Having visited a number of fan boards/sites I saw that the majority seemed to like the idea of casting Alexander Skarsgard. Either way, I hope we find out who’ll be playing Thor soon as all of this guessing, assuming and speculating is getting tiresome!
