In the run up to the release of CGI disaster-fest 2012 director Roland Emmerich revealed that he was planning to make a TV show based on the film which would follow the events of the films ending. It would be called 2013 and Emmerich said it would contain similar themes to those in ABC’s Lost (a bunch of survivors stranded somewhere). However in an interview with MovieWeb Emmerich said that it’s unlikely the TV show will come into function as “it was just too big for TV”.

It has been reported that you plan on turning 2012 into a television series. Where does production on that stand at this point in time?

Roland Emmerich: We tried to do that. But the TV people soon realized what we really wanted to do with the concept. They said, “You cannot do this on television.” So I said, “Let’s not do it. It was just too big for TV. What we wanted to do.”

Is there any plan to turn that idea into a feature film?

Roland Emmerich: No, no, no. It was not a sequel. It was a story you could only tell once. There was no sequel to Noah’s Ark. It would have been a great TV show. Because it would have dealt with the facts of arriving in Africa. We would have seen what happened had Cape Town survived. Those people already living there would be majorly pissed. Because the ships didn’t take them. There was this whole political edge to it. It would have been a very political TV show. It had such big themes. It was about reaching for the stars. There was an economic reality that kept it from becoming a reality. We didn’t want to compromise. We said, “Let’s not do it.”

After reading his description I would actually be interested in seeing a show like that. It has a District 9 vibe to it (without the aliens obviously). Emmerich says that producer Mark Gordon (Grey’s Anatomy, 2012) is trying to find a way to make it cheaper in the hope of attracting studios, although he doesn’t think it will happen.

Roland Emmerich kicked off the holiday season in earnest with the biggest single movie weekend box office take since July, as his latest disaster flick 2012 (Sony Pictures), starring John Cusack and Chiwetel Ejiofor, brought in an estimated $65 million over the weekend, making it the seventh biggest November opener ever. Produced for $200 million, Emmerich’s latest simultaneously brought in $160 million outside the United States for a 3-day worldwide gross of $225 million.

It will be interesting to see how well 2012 survives next weekend when it meets the tsunami of Twilight fans flocking to see The Twilight Saga: New Moon.

2012 must be a fun movie to market. Columbia don’t have to satisfy a fanbase or photoshop peoples body parts, as their only focus is scare the crap out of people in the hope they go and see a disaster movie about the end of the world. Most of the posters we have seen for the film have featured drowning cities and falling landmarks, which were eye catching enough in there average form, however from the image above you can see the marketing folks went a little bit further to promote the film in a Brazilian subway.

If only they covered the ceiling too. That would really get peoples attention!

If you have seen the trailers and 5 minute preview for Roland Emmerich 2012 then you may have noticed that a great deal of special effects are involved. It’s not obvious at first but after you see California sink into the ocean, killing millions, it suddenly dawns on you that they didn’t actually sink part of America for the movie, so some of that movie magic must be involved somewhere. Well Yahoo! have posted a new feature online which takes us behind the scenes of 2012, and we get a glimpse at how they make all that craziness.

It’s clear that 2012 relies heavily on special effects, but what would the movie look like without them? It’d probably be 2 hours of this:

We saw a 50 second preview yesterday and now we have the full 5 minute clip. It’s crazy, it’s over the top and it’s full of CGI. I don’t think there will be a disaster movie in the future that will be able to top this.

It begins with John Cusack driving at high speed in a limo whilst on the phone to the mother of his children. He tells her to “pack up the kids” because “California is going down”. Less than a minute later everyone is in the limo and they are driving away from an earthquake (just like people ran from the cold in The Day After Tomorrow). For the rest of the clip it’s just pure mayhem and a special effects bonanza. You’ll have to watch it to understand what I’m talking about.

Obviously this is one of those big blockbusters that’s main selling point is the special effects. The story and acting will take a back seat, but people will lap it up and it will make a tonne of money. From the clip I got the feeling that the actors were under-acting, but I can understand why. Director Roland Emmerich will have told them the basics, however I don’t even think the actors could imagine what the end result would be.

Sony Pictures have gone all out with the marketing for Roland Emmerich’s 2012 and have spent around $4 million to air two minutes of the movie on virtually every major North American network and cable channel on Thursday October 1 between 10:50 and 11:00 P.M. EST/PST. Here’s more on the deal from Heat Vision:

The studio is projecting a reach of 110 million viewers and hoping to reach about 90% of all households watching commercial TV at that time. This “roadblock,” as the studio calls it, is costing about $4 million, according to sources. The delivery is about four times the audience of the Super Bowl, considered the most widely-watched TV event in a year, with the most coveted, and most expensive (around $3 million for 30 seconds) ad time.

The two minute scene will end in a cliffhanger, with audience watchers having the opportunity to see the conclusion on fanfast.com and Comcast On Demand.

Sony aims to replicate the roadblock in other countries at the end of October. The movie opens worldwide November 13.

A new trailer for Roland Emmerich’s 2012 has appeared online. The guy behind Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow has outdone himself this time. Not only do we have bigger tsunami’s than we’ve ever seen on-screen, we also have earthquakes, meteors, volcanic eruptions, tornadoes and giraffes. The trailer is rather epic and contains a dozen great money shot scenes, but the problem with Emmerich’s films is that they look cool, but the characters and emotion take a backseat. Yes, we see them crying while being taken out by a tidal wave in the trailer, but I doubt we will give a damn while watching the film. I hope I’m wrong though.
