Speculation about a sequel to last year’s Magic Mike started right after the film’s release. Magic Mike director, Steven Soderbergh, recently spoke to Pride Source and discussed how Magic Mike 2 was coming along and on how involved he would be in the film. Magic Mike 2 is, according to Soderbergh, pretty far along already, but it doesn’t look like Soderbergh will be back in the director’s chair.
It comes as no surprise that Soderbergh’s involvement will be somewhat limited, since he is going into an extended hiatus from film-making. He still wants to be involved in Magic Mike 2 however, saying that he meets with those involved every couple of weeks to see where the film is going. Soderbergh is obviously invested in the sequel and wants to see that it’s well done.
Soderbergh discussed that the film would not be a retread of the original and would cover new ground. Like the first film, Magic Mike 2 will draw upon the real life experiences of Channing Tatum, who was a male stripper before he made it big. Apparently there were many of Tatum’s experiences that couldn’t quite fit into the first film, including one big one that is “really hilarious and cinematic.” With any luck this will mean Magic Mike 2 will be just as amazing as the first.
