According to Vulture Steve Quale, who served as second unit director on James Cameron’s Avatar and directed Final Destination 5, is in negotiations with New Line to direct a hurricane movie called Category 6.
The movie is described as a “found footage picture in the vein of Cloverfield about high-school students documenting the wrath of an enormous, tornado-spawning windstorm.”
While there is no official Category 6 for hurricanes some scientists suggested one be introduced following a series of powerful storm systems during the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season. Regardless of the science, the absence of a Category 6 will probably serve as a marketing tool (the biggest storm the world has witnessed..in 3D!)
There have been a few hurricane disaster movies over the years, most notably Twister in 1996. The big disaster movies such as The Day After Tomorrow and 2012 have been done and didn’t really offer anything new other than impressive visual effects, so maybe the found footage route will provide a fresh take on being caught in the eye of a 155mph wind vortex.
