Variety reports that British actor Stephen Graham will be joining Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides as Jack Sparrow’s sidekick. The brief article describes the character as “Scram, a Machiavellian pirate.” I guess it sounds kinda interesting, but we won’t really know for sure until next May, when we’ll get to see it for ourselves.
Graham previously starred in Public Enemies alongside Johnny Depp, and his portrayal of Baby Face Nelson was one of the few good things about that movie (in my opinion). And his frightening performance as Combo in This Is England (pictured above) was absolutely brilliant, and so at least we know for sure that the man has talent. It’ll be interesting to see whether his role as Scram in Pirates will be a properly developed character, or a typical “sidekick” utilised solely for the purposes of comic relief. Not that I don’t want to see a funny character, mind…perhaps a little from column A, and a little from column B.
What with Penelope Cruz, Deadwood‘s Ian McShane, the return of Geoffrey Rush and (obviously) Johnny Depp, this movie is building up quite a cast. I loved the first two Pirates but was let down by the third’s long, droning conclusion to the story – I’d really like to see a fourth film that captures the sense of fun, adventure and plot twists seen in the first film.
In mini-news, a reader of Ain’t It Cool sent them in a couple of pictures of a new ship being constructed for Stranger Tides. It’s not much, but hey…might as well take a look.
