There has been a lot of speculation about the upcoming third Star Wars trilogy, and now we have a bit more, fresh from the rumor mill. On Monday Collider.com reported that sources told them Matthew Vaughn would direct Episode VII, however, Collider also emphasized that these rumors were still unconfirmed. The second rumor comes from EW.com, which has reported that Ford is open to the idea of returning as the legendary Han Solo.
Matthew Vaughn’s credits include; Kick-Ass, Stardust and most recently X-Men First Class. Recently however Vaughn dropped out of directing the sequel to his highly successful X-Men film, with Bryan Singer returning to the franchise. It now seems that Vaughn’s decision was based on the understanding that he would instead be directing Episode VII.
Harrison Ford has reportedly said that he is willing to return to Star War, but only under the right circumstances. It wasn’t all that long ago that Ford returned to another iconic role in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, however the situation is a bit different with this one. Ford seems to genuinely enjoy playing Indy, however the same can’t be said about Solo. Ford’s famously hates Star Wars, in fact he almost did not even come back for Return of the Jedi. Even once he was on board for Jedi he strongly pushed for his character to die at the end of the film. With that in mind, perhaps the “right circumstances” are a death scene for the smuggler in the next trilogy.
