Stallone and De Niro attached to boxing movie Grudge Match

Two of the world’s most recognizable boxers aren’t actually boxers at all – they just played some in the movies. According to The Wrap, Sylvester Stallone, who wrote and starred in Rocky, and Robert De Niro, who played Jake La Motta in Scorsese’s Raging Bull, are in talks to step back into the ring for a boxing comedy called Grudge Match. More info below.

Not much is known about the plot of this story yet, aside from it being about “two retired boxers who return to the ring for a final grudge match.” Neither of these guys are well known for their comedy prowess, so this could easily turn into a disaster on screen. Not helping matters is the director, Peter Segal, who has directed a string of Adam Sandler comedies in the past decade including 50 First Dates and The Longest Yard.

I don’t know about this one. The prospect of seeing these guys step into the ring together may have been appealing twenty or thirty years ago, but they’re so old now that I’m not sure it’ll even be remotely thrilling. And like I said, it’s not like they’ve got great comedy backgrounds (De Niro’s better than Stallone in this category for sure), but if boxing isn’t the main draw, then I’m not sure I want to see a couple of guys in their late 60s sitting around cracking jokes. What do you think?
