I’ve been waiting to see what Steven Spielberg’s next directing gig would be after his invisible rabbit movie with Robert Downey Jr. didn’t work out. Well Spielberg, who will be sticking with the animal theme, has decided War Horse will be his next film.
Steven Spielberg has selected his next film: World War I epic “War Horse.”
Film is based on Michael Morpurgo’s novel of the same name, as well as a recent stage adaptation. Scribes Lee Hall and Richard Curtis are adapting.
Set against the sweeping backdrop of the Great War, storyline charts the extraordinary friendship between a boy and a horse who are separated but whose fates continue to intertwine over the course of WWI.
Spielberg said he knew from the minute he read the book that he wanted DreamWorks to make the film. “Its heart and its message provide a story that can be felt in every country,” he said.
Spielberg recently produced the World War II mini-series The Pacific with Tom Hanks, which may have spurred him to make another war movie. The director won two Best Director Oscars for both Schinder’s List and Saving Private Ryan, so its clear he is at his best when making War-themed movies.
The studio has set an August 10, 2011 release for the film, and will be casting the key role of ‘the horse’ in the upcoming months.
