Back in March 2010 we heard that producers Mark Gordon (Saving Private Ryan, 2012) and Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity) were planning to make a movie based on the classic 1980s arcade game Space Invaders.
Not much has been heard since (pleasing many, i’m sure), but now the rights have changed hands, and a big screen version of Space Invaders is back on the agenda.
According to Heat Vision Lorenzo di Bonaventura, producer of Transformers, Salt and G.I. Joe, has teamed up with fellow producer Gigi Pritzker (The Spirit, Drive) to option the rights and develop the project. They are now said to be looking for a writer to come up with a story.
If they wanted to make a space battle movie they should have just gone ahead and made one, however for some reason producers think an already established brand will help sell a movie. Peter Berg’s Battleship, which comes out next summer, is based on the board game of the same name but they’ve turned it into an alien invasion movie with Rihanna. Studios are only taking the game name for marketing purposes, and the story itself is just filled with whatever they think will make a summer blockbuster.
In Space Invaders the player controls a laser cannon by moving it horizontally across the bottom of the screen and firing at descending aliens. A basic alien invasion/attack story can be established here, but they’ll no doubt throw in a love story with two good looking 20-something’s and establish an ethnically diverse team to take the aliens down.
