As you know, superhero movies and fairy tale films are pretty much the go-to choices for studios these days. The former category has been cemented as a box office juggernaut with the success of films like The Avengers and the presumed success of the looming The Dark Knight Rises, but the latter isn’t showing signs of slowing down, either. Producer Neal Moritz (Fast Five, 21 Jump Street) is looking to get into the action with a Sleeping Beauty movie that has a new twist. More info after the jump.
This still-untitled comedy will be “a modern-day retelling that finds the male protagonist accidently awakening Sleeping Beauty and finding that he can’t get rid of the lovestruck heroine.” Sounds like a totally different take on the story, and as tired as I’m getting of these fairy tales, setting it in modern day could make all the difference in the world. It’ll be interesting to see if they keep the magical angle to it or try to ground it a bit more in reality by doing something like using a coma instead of a sleeping spell.
With Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent in production for release next year, it’s certainly a crowded marketplace for fairy tales, but if this project can differentiate itself enough from stuff like that and Snow White & The Huntsman, it could very well find an audience willing to give it a shot. We’ll keep you updated with more as it arrives.
