Ever since the announcement came down that J.J. Abrams would be directing Star Wars Episode VII fans have wondered about the future of the Star Trek film series. While on the red carpet Simon Pegg, AKA Scotty, was asked which director he’d like to see step in for Star Trek 3 if Abrams didn’t return and confidently replied “(Abrams) will do Star Trek 3.”
You can watch Pegg’s comments below:
This isn’t exactly definitive to say the least, and it may just be Pegg is trying to avoid controversy, or is simply engaging in wishful thinking, but it’s the only real thing we have to go on so far. Episode VII is due out in 2015, and there is no word yet on when another Star Trek film will happen. There was a four year gap between Star Trek and Into Darkness, and if that trend continues Star Trek 3 would be released sometime in 2017.
Whether or not Abrams would be willing and able to continue directing both iconic franchises, especially if they came out roughly within a year of one another, is questionable. Still, it isn’t unthinkable that Abrams couldn’t find time to work on two films sometime over the next three to four years, after all Pegg also talked about this being an opportunity for Star Wars and Star Trek fans to come together.
