If I was surprised by this, I wouldn’t deserve to have a brain.
It’s not much to go on, but a quote from Justin Marks, screenwriter on Sony’s upcoming Shadow of the Colossus movie, seems to suggest that the film being in 3D is an absolute inevitability.
In an interesting LA Times article about how 3D is (unfortunately) changing the way screenwriters have to write their scripts, Marks was quoted and credited as writer on the Colossus movie:
“3-D continues to speak to the elimination of the middle creatively,” says Justin Marks, the writer on Disney’s former “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” project and Sony’s action film “Shadow of the Colossus.” “If you don’t have an action tentpole that can conceivably be thought of in 3-D, you may as well make small indie movies because the studios aren’t going to be that interested.”
So yeah. If he said that and Shadow of the Colossus was actually going to be 2D…well I’d be shocked to my core.
Marks was confirmed to be writing the Colossus movie about a year ago. He previously wrote Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li, which may or may not be good news for all involved. Shadow of the Colossus is one of my favourite games of all time however, so if he screws this up as well, there’s gonna be Hell to pay.
As awesome as the Colossus themselves would look on-screen, the game has hardly any dialogue and I feel it’s a kinda personal and isolated experience. I don’t think it’d work too well as a film, apart from the visual aspect of it. This better not turn into another hammy 3D gimmick action picture. But is that too much to ask for? It’s the business side that matters – so yes, it is.
This is probably the last time I’ll write about a film going 3D – it doesn’t seem like it’s even news anymore… Does anyone care about it? Do you know anyone who bursts with excitement, goes “OH MY GOD I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS IS IN 3D”? Do the little kids even care anymore?! When will it end?!?
