Dimension Films has given Scream 4 the greenlight with the aim of releasing it on April 15th 2011. Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courteney Cox Arquette will be reprising their roles of Sidney Prescott, Sheriff ‘Dewey’ Riley and Gale Weathers, and Wes Craven will be returning to direct.
Scream writer Kevin Williamson has written the screenplay, and he mentioned that he envisions it to be the first of a new trilogy. New actors and characters will be added so that the films can continue if the regulars are bumped off. I’m not saying they will be, but I can’t imagine they’d be up for another set of films. They may be just ‘passing the torch’ in Scream 4.
To date the Scream franchise is the most successful in the ‘Slasher’ genre, grossing a total of $500 million worldwide. Despite the films decreasing in quality as the trilogy progressed, the first remains a classic. Hopefully Craven will be able to capture some of that 90’s wit instead of turning into Saw-like torture porn. The main creative people will be back, so hopefully it won’t disappoint.
Filming is said to begin in May.
