Earlier this year Robert Downey Jr. signed up to star in Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity, however he will not be the lead. Downey will play the leader of a team posted at a remote space station. While he and a female colleague are travelling outside the space station, the other team members are decimated by debris from an exploded satellite.
Much of the film is devoted to the females struggle to get back to Earth and her daughter. Angelina Jolie was attached at one point; however she passed, and now Scarlet Johansson may be taking on the role instead.
NY Daily News say that Johansson “verbally agreed” last week to take on the leading-lady role. Both Johansson and Downey Jr. share the same agent so that could be a factor why they are re-teaming after Iron Man 2. I don’t know how many fully qualified 26 year old astronauts are currently in space, but its sci-fi so they can bend reality a bit.
Gravity will be as ambitious technology-wise as Avatar, with 60% of the film being CG feature animation. The opening shot alone is slated to last at least 20 minutes long, which is longer than anything Alfonso Cuaron has done before (Children of Men).
Shooting will begin this summer with Robert Downey Jr. leaving to shoot Sherlock Holmes 2 half way though. He will return to finish his bit after Sherlock and in-between The Avengers.
