A remake of Annie, the classic musical about a red-headed orphan, is coming our way courtesy of producers Will Smith and Jay-Z. Nine-year-old Quvenzhane Wallis has been cast in the lead role. Wallis was nominated for best actress at last year’s Academy Awards for her performance in Beasts of the Southern Wild. Jamie Foxx will play Benjamin Stacks, better known as ‘Daddy Warbucks’ in other adaptations. Now its been announced that Sandra Bullock is in early negotiations to join the project.
Bullock would play Miss Hannigan, the evil lady who runs the orphanage that Annie is stuck in. That is, before Django comes to rescue her…excuse me, ‘Benjamin Stacks’. A deal hasn’t been made yet, and Bullock already passed on the project back in March, but apparently the studio wants her bad enough that they’re now renegotiating.
Jay-Z fans will know that he already has an affinity for Annie, with his song “Hard Knock Life” borrowing the chorus of the same titled song from the musical. It remains to be seen if all of the songs in this new movie version will be getting a hip-hop remix, or if they’ll use the classic melodies.
Will Gluck (Easy A, Friends with Benefits) will direct from a screenplay written by Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada, 27 Dresses, We Bought a Zoo). Production is slated to begin this fall for a December 25th, 2014 release date.
