Our last update about Three Mississippi looked pretty promising. The film was set to reunite The Other Guys co-stars Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell for a football comedy that involves two feuding families that have an epic touch football game every year at Thanksgiving. But now Vulture reports that Wahlberg has a scheduling conflict and Adam Sandler is in line to replace him. Much more information after the jump.
Wahlberg has been talking with Battleship director Peter Berg about taking the lead in Berg’s next film, a war thriller called Lone Survivor in which Wahlberg would play the leader of an elite fighting unit who survives an ambush in Afghanistan. The problem is that Battleship tanked at the box office, causing Universal to drop out of financing Lone Survivor. Another company stepped in to foot the bill, but with one condition: Lone Survivor must be Wahlberg’s next movie, which makes it impossible for him to film Three Mississippi during their planned September start. (And Will Ferrell is too busy to wait around until Wahlberg’s done.)
Sigh…just another reason to despise Battleship. Now Sandler, who is familiar with football movies having done The Waterboy and The Longest Yard remake, is set to slide into the vacated star slot. Some people may be excited about the two former “Saturday Night Live” stars facing off on the big screen, but I think Ferrell is in a class of his own when it comes to comedy and Sandler’s brand of humor can’t hold a candle to Ferrell’s work.
Anyone think Sandler is an improvement over Wahlberg?
