Sam Raimi (Drag Me to Hell, Spider-Man Trilogy) has revealed on the Disney Movies UK Twitter account that he plans to commence work on a script for Evil Dead 4 in the summer with his brother Ivan Raimi. Interestingly, the film would follow on from the original trilogy and is unlikely to have anything to do with the Evil Dead reboot, which is due for release in the US on 5th April and the UK on 19th April 2013.
Here’s the scoop:
“I would love to make Evil Dead 4,” said Raimi. “My brother and I plan to work on the script this summer.”
Raimi later moved to quell the news on Bleeding Cool:
Those guys made me say that. I am thinking about it but a crowd goes “Come on Sam, do it!” so I said “Okay, I guess I was talking to my brother about it.” But I feel like I was pushed into saying that, a little bit. In the hallway today I joked with Ivan [his brother] “Get working on that script!” but I really don’t know.
I’m afraid that every time I talk about it people get really mad at me when I don’t follow through with it. I would like to work on the script over the summer, that much is true. But the reason to come back and do it again is only that they’re making me, those fans.
It’s not surprising that the director moved quickly to play down the news; his Evil Dead reboot is receiving a lot of interest and news of a fourth instalment following on from the original trilogy may prove detrimental and confusing.
Raimi also has a potentially huge blockbuster on the verge of release, Disney’s Oz The Great and Powerful. The film is due for release on 8th March and stars James Franco (Spider-Man, 127 Hours), Mila Kunis (Ted, Black Swan) and Rachel Weisz (The Bourne Legacy, The Fountain).
