Well, this is…somewhat unexpected. Sony Pictures has agreed to revive Sabrina The Teenage Witch as a superhero movie with “an origin story in the vein of Spider-Man, about a young girl coming to terms with her remarkable powers.” More after the jump.
Those of you who grew up in America in the 90s probably remember the “Sabrina” television series starring Melissa Joan Hart that ran for seven seasons. But I had no idea the history of this property stretched back even further to a comic strip that first appeared in Archie comics back in the 1960s. I didn’t really consider this to be a viable franchise since I haven’t heard a peep about it after the TV series came to an end, but apparently the Sony brass disagrees with me. I guess I should have known that a studio would go after ANY property with a fan base for a film adaptation, and I guess we can all be thankful it’s not another board game this time.
According to Deadline, this time around Salem the cat (a character who, despite being animatronic, I remember being one of the funniest parts of the show) will be a transformed prince who conjures up unique love stories for our teenage heroine.
Anybody out there remember the television show? What do you think about a Sabrina movie being made for the next generation?
