Ryan Reynolds is the Green Lantern

ryan_reynoldsWell that didn’t take long. This morning it was reported that Bradley Cooper, Ryan Reynolds and Justin Timberlake were in the running to play the lead in Green Lantern, and now according to Variety Reynolds has emerged victorious.

Ryan Reynolds has landed the coveted role of “Green Lantern,” getting the starring role in Warner Bros.’ live-action film based on the DC Comics hero.

Martin Campbell will direct. The studio is still working on the picture’s budget, but production is expected to begin in January.

The news caps off a memorable summer for Reynolds, who played Deadpool in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” a performance that prompted Fox to begin development on a spinoff film. Reynolds followed that by starring opposite Sandra Bullock in the romantic comedy “The Proposal,” which crossed the $100 million mark this week.

Warners and Campbell chose Reynolds, who vied for the superhero role along with “The Hangover” star Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto. The momentum built for Reynolds in the last week, as he was the only actor whose option was extended.

Personally I was backing Bradley Cooper, simply because Reynolds will probably be set up for the next few years with Deadpool and it’s not fun when you have one actor hogging multiple superhero roles. But I suppose he can do both as Green Lantern is gearing up for filming in January and Deadpool doesn’t even have a script yet.

Are you happy that Ryan Reynolds got the role? Would you have preferred a different actor that didn’t make Warner Bros. final 3?

I'm sure that with this will remove Ryan Reynolds from the spot of Deadpool.

I for one think that Ryan Reynolds will be an incredible Green Lantern. It took me by surprise and I was hoping that he would be Flash, but I think there are people with mass amounts of talent that get second rated alot and its Ryan Reynolds time to shine. If this does mean that Ryan Reynolds is out as deadpool, I'm sad to see him go but this is a better career move. I think he will still do deadpool, unless someone walked up to him from fox and told him they were going to butcher the character.

I still think Nathan Fillion could of been a better Hal Jordan, but Reynolds is good as well. Well just have to see what happens.

I think Nathan Fillion would have been a perfect Green Lantern! And I think Ryan Reynolds makes a perfect Deadpool! Not sure what this means for Deadpool now?? Just take the time and make it good!!!

This changes nothing, Deadpool is a masked hero mainly and when the mask is off he will have a lot of make-up on him. Green Lantern is different.

Harrison Ford managed to be Han Solo and Indiana Jones while Stallone was Rocky and Rambo. I say Ryan can be both Deadpool and Green Lantern and good for him, he deserves it.

epic fail alex it changes everything an actor should not just star in one superhero movie from Marvel's X-Men and then star as another superhero movie from DC the movie most likely will fail big time

    - Halle Berry played Storm in X-Men then star in DC's Catwoman did not work it failed big time.
    - Bryan Singer directed X-Men then he directed DC's Superman Returns then that movie failed
    - James Marsden starred as Cyclops from X-Men then he go and star in Superman Returns that movie did not do well for him.

plus Harrison Ford starring Han Solo and Indiana Jones and Stallone starring Rocky and Rambo is not the same thing at all they are not comic book movies

Those movies sucked because they sucked. Not because they crossed the Marvel/DC "no mans land".
  • Terry
yes them movies sucked but in no means a person whos famous from Marvel films should crossover and star in a DC film plus i proven they never worked for an actor who star in one comic book movie Marvel then switch to star in DC film

do you think its alright if RDJ whos famous for playing Marvel Iron Man and then crossover to DC to star in a Green Arrow movie?

personally thats not right and i think its not right for Ryan Reynolds to play Deadpool and Green Lantern it will confuse and upset the fans and the general public.

I think we're argueing the same point here, because look at my other comment. I even said something along the lines of Robert Downey Jr. not being able to star in a DC movie.

But, I still stand by my word; Those DC movies sucked because they sucked, not because the actors crossed over that Marvel/DC line.

    I obviously completely agree that Ryan Renolds playing and starring in 2 super hero movies is bad. Again, read the comment right after this one. >_>;

well it does not help when an actor is famous from one major comic book film then jump to another

if this Deadpool movie aint happening then im alright for Ryan Reynolds to play Green Lantern but right now that we know is Deadpool is still happening and starring in both a Marvel and DC film is way too much and it will upset the fans and the public

i feel Bradley Cooper should of been cast as Hal Jordan. also i feel this movie is been cursed right now it feels like Superman Returns heres the reason Green Lantern is been development at Fox Studios Australia the same place where they did Superman Returns. plus both this movie and Superman Returns have people who worked on FOX X-Men movies.

Completely agree. You can't just take a person who's already starring in a Marvel super hero movie and put him in a DC super hero movie. o_O They're gonna be at least a year in time difference, and apparently they're gonna try and do Deadpool right this movie and make him all scarred up, and on occasion, a mask.

But still, I don't like the idea of him playing in 2 super hero lead roles, regardless if it's Marvel/DC. >.> Grr. But it's not just the studio's fault for picking him, Ryan Renold's auditioned for this role, which confuses me.. He's so excited to be in the Deadpool movie, because he talks about it so much in interviews, but he goes ahead with another super hero movie?

    I don't get it. It's like Deadpool isn't a big enough role for you..? I'm kind of thrown for a loop here, because I was so 100% behind Ryan, because he was a huge Deadpool fan and commited to staying true to the character, but he goes ahead to become another super hero. It breaks my illusion that the movie is actually real and taking place, as weird as that may sound. ._.;

It's like, Ryan's cheating on Deadpool with the Green Lanturn. o-O That statement pretty much sums up my feelings.
  • Alex
If they do Deadpool right you will never see Ryan's face, only his voice. That's why this is different and I think, no, I know he can do both.

And Terry, what are you, 5? Epic fail? That line alone makes you sound like a moron.
  • terry
if something is a Epic Fail im going to say it no matter what

anyway we know Deadpool wears a mask but the problem is we all still know its Ryan Reynolds still behind the mask. Ryan Reynolds playing both Deadpool and Green Lantern is still not right. i have a feeling Deadpool is not going to be made or this casting of Ryan Reynolds been confirmed to be the Green Lantern been taken out of context
  • vcurtz
I'm kind of ticked. What? Deadpool isn't a big enough superhero for you? >_>;; People were skeptical when he signed up for Deadpool because he was Hannibal King in Blade III. Now he's got 2 super hero movies?

I don't think this will change anything for Deadpool, just because of all the Deadpool talk Ryan's been doing in interviews buuut.. You never know. Urgh. T_T Like, if it was just the Wade Wilson in the Wolverine movie, okay, I wouldn't have a problem, but he's GOING to have his own super hero movie! \0.0/ Why does he need 2? Plus it's a DC character. T^T It's like Robert Downey Jr. being cast as Aqua Man. (Forgive my bad example, I know nothing of DC comics.)

Well...if they do Deadpool right...you actually shouldnt be able to really see Ryan Reynolds...maybe a bit benath make up and cgi ...dunno but thats what i heard abozut the deadpool charakter
