We’re getting quite a lot of X-Men: First Class speculation recently, and I’ll admit I’m liking it. Earlier today we heard that Matthew Vaughn was interested in Michael Fassbender playing Magneto, and now Die Another Day actress Rosamund Pike may be in talks to play Emma Frost in the film.
From Forces of Geek:
One of my FOG! Operatives in Jolly Ole England passed along some fairly solid information regarding Rosamund Pike testing and very possibly being cast in the role of Emma Frost in the upcoming X-Men: First Class movie.
Apparently, Pike has been a fan favorite for the role, was spotted around Lucinda Syson’s offices. Lucinda worked as First Class director Matthew Vaughn’s casting director on Kick-Ass and Stardust.
They continue to say that the actress was spotted with an X-Men Origins: Emma Frost comic book, which is why they are suggesting she is in talks to play the character.
This news, if true, is interesting. Emma Frost appeared briefly in X-Men Origins: Wolverine last year (she was the girl who turned into diamonds), although to be honest I think they just decided to throw her in there for the sake of it. She didn’t really belong there, and it seems X-Men: First Class will be ignoring the events of Wolverine, which is a good thing.
What I find even more interesting, however, is that Bryan Singer originally wanted Emma Frost to appear in X-Men 3 back when he was still attached to direct. He apparently wanted Sigourney Weaver for the role, and she would have played an old lover of Charles Xavier who re-emerged after sensing Jean Grey had gone all powerful (you can read what they had planned for X3 here).
Now, Singer wrote the original treatment for X-Men: First Class (when he was still attached to direct that), and we have since heard that the story will focus on young versions of Charles Xavier and Magneto discovering their powers and forming the X-Men. James McAvoy was cast as Xavier recently, and he just happens to be the same age as Rosamund Pike (31). Has Singer drawn the romantic element from his unused X3 idea and transferred it to First Class?
For those unfamiliar with Emma Frost she is a mutant with powers of telepathy, similar to that of Xavier. She can broadcast and receive thoughts, control minds, alter perceptions and memories etc. In the comics she is known for being a bit of a b*tch (being dubbed the White Queen) and she started off as an enemy to the X-Men, but she later joined them. One of her most well known storylines is her love triangle with Cyclops and Jean, although as the latter two are expected to be teens in the film I doubt they will be covering that.
What do you think of Rosamund Pike possibly playing Emma Frost? Do you think she can pull off that icy demeanor Frost is known for?
