The trailer for the highly anticipated remake of the 2003 Korean classic Oldboy has just emerged online. The adaptation stars Josh Brolin and is directed by Spike Lee. This doesn’t look like your typical ‘Spike Lee Joint’, so much so that the poster informs us that this is a ‘Spike Lee Film’, in lieu of his trademark credit.
At one point Steven Spielberg and Will Smith were planning to adapt the film but that never materialized. It’s probably for the best as I’m pretty sure the Spike Lee/Josh Brolin version is going to be way more gritty than that A-List treatment would have been.
The preview is very violent, which appears to be keeping in tradition with the graphic nature of the first film. However, it might reveal a bit too much; so if you haven’t seen the original and want to go in completely fresh, you may want to steer clear. The last part of the trailer with Samuel L. Jackson is particularly spoiler heavy.
Oldboy also stars Elizabeth Olsen, Sharlto Copley, Michael Imperioli, and Samuel L. Jackson, with a script by Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend, Thor). It will be released on October 25th.
