If you’ve been following movie news for a while, you may remember rumblings about another Rambo film a few years ago. It’s gone through different iterations – one was a south-of-the-border human trafficking revenge story; another version had Rambo fighting a mutant beast in the Pacific Northwest – but since Stallone got involved with The Expendables franchise, it’s been all quiet on the Rambo front. Until now.
Sean Hood, the writer behind the recent Conan the Barbarian reboot, is currently writing Rambo 5 (or whatever it will eventually be called), and he says that Sylvester Stallone is very much involved. Collider noticed his tweets on the subject:
Rambo 5 on hold as Sly finishes Expendables 2. He hasn’t decided if R5 will be an Unforgiven or a “passing of the torch.”
Creatively, I’d say that the most recent film Rambo brought the series to as good of a close as anyone could ask for. But a “passing of the torch” would be the best case scenario for Lionsgate, who owns the rights to the character and the franchise as a whole. If Stallone absolutely must come back to this character, I’d prefer the Unforgiven approach, but I’d much rather he (and Lionsgate) abandon the idea and come up with something better to do. After all, Sly’s got The Tomb lined up with Arnold Schwarzenegger right after the Expendables sequel, so the dude will be pushing 70 by the time Rambo 5 hits the big screen. Which approach would you like to see, if any?
