Piranha 3D may have only made $10 million this weekend, coming in at #6 at the US box office behind the likes of The Expendables, Eat Pray Love and Vampires Suck, but that is enough for Dimension Films to green light a sequel.
The 3D horror had a budget of around $24 million, and has received surprisingly positive reviews. As I type it has 81% on Rotton Tomatoes, which is around 70% more than I expected.
Here’s the press release from Dimension Films:
After earning rave reviews from top critics, wild cheers from audiences around the country, and $10 million in its opening weekend box office, Dimension Films is pleased to announce that PIRANHA 3D – THE SEQUEL is in the works.
PIRANHA 3D producer Mark Canton stated, “We are thrilled that audiences are not just loving PIRANHA 3D, but cheering for it. And it’s fantastic that so many critics are really getting the movie and recommending it. We can’t wait to get to work on the sequel.”
No word yet on whether director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) will be returning. I assume those characters that survived may be asked to return, but there is nothing wrong with fresh meat.
