Photos of Nicolas Cage dressed as Superman for Tim Burton’s aborted reboot, Superman Lives, have emerged on Twitter. The film was based on a screenplay by Kevin Smith and had Cage as a flightless incarnation of Superman. Lex Luthor, Brainiac and Doomsday were set to be the villains, and the story was based on the ‘Death of Superman’ comic book.
These images act as a stark reminder as to how lucky we were that this reboot was never made. In fairness, the suit looks fairly decent, but the immense muscle definition looks unnecessary and very weird. However, with the imperfections in mind, it is evident how much the suit has influenced Henry Cavill’s in Zack Snyder’s upcoming film, Man of Steel.
As an actor Cage is very gifted but too inconsistent, and given the wrong role, he is appalling. He doesn’t seem comfortable in costume and bares absolutely no resemblance to Clark Kent/Superman.
It is unlikely that the sudden emergence of these photos was a coincidence given the recent news that Jon Schnepp (Adult Swim’s Metalocalypse) is appealing for funding on Kickstarter to make a documentary on the failed movie.
Man of Steel is due for release in the US & UK on 14th June 2013. The film is directed by Zack Snyder, and stars Henry Cavill as Superman, Russell Crowe, Michael Shannon and Amy Adams.
