Lionsgate has cast three-time Oscar nominee and one-time Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and because of the role he’s signed on for he’ll probably appear in the follow-up, Mockingjay, also.
Hoffman will play Plutarch Heavensbee, Head Gamemaker for The Hunger Games. Seneca Crane (played by Wes Bentley) was Head Gamemaker in the first film, but if you saw it you’ll know that he won’t be featured in Catching Fire. The role of Plutarch Heavensbee is quite a pivotal one, so it makes sense that Lionsgate would go after a well-respected actor such as Hoffman.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.
Filming will begin late-September under the direction of Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend, Water for Elephants).
