Peter Dinklage to play Sentinel creator in X-Men: Days of Future Past?

x men peter dinklage ImagePeter Dinklage (TV’s Game of Thrones) may be in line to portray Bolivar Trask, the creator of the Sentinels, according to MTV Geek. X-Men: Days of Future Past director, Bryan Singer, recently announced that Dinklage would be joining the cast via Twitter, causing massive speculation over his role within the movie.

MTV claim that the anonymous tipster is an “extremely reliable” source:

You saw speculation on MTV Splashpage about what villain ‘Game of Thrones’ Peter Dinklage is playing in ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ this morning… But thanks to a tipster who prefers to remain anonymous, but is extremely reliable, we can tentatively confirm: Dinklage is playing Bolivar Trask, inventor of the mutant hunting robot Sentinels in the movie sequel.

Which makes a lot of sense: there’s already been rumors of Sentinels in the movie, which this fits right in with; there are also Sentinels in the dystopian future of the comic book version of Days of Future Past; and most importantly, Dinklage, in this Variety article is called the “main antagonist,” not the villain.

First introduced in Uncanny X-Men #14, waaaay back in 1965, the Stan Lee/Jack Kirby created character was an inventor and anthropologist who was threatened by the increasing number of mutants popping up in society.

Another interesting aspect of this character is that both of his children are mutants:

The first, Larry Trask, was able to see the future until his Dad found a way to suppress his powers… Elements of which were used for Stryker’s relationship with his son in ‘X2.’ The second, and more important child of Trask? Tanya, who can travel through time.

The Days of Future Past comic storyline alternates between present day, in which the X-Men fight the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and a future timeline caused by the X-Men’s failure to prevent the Brotherhood from assassinating Senator Robert Kelly. In this future universe, Sentinels rule the United States, and mutants live in internment camps.

James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, and Nicholas Hoult are all set to reprise their roles, along with Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Ellen Page, Anna Paquin, and Shawn Ashmore. Filming will begin in April for a July 2014 release.

If I remember correctly, XMen 3 featured Bolivar Trask and he was played by Bill Duke. Does this mean, hopefully, that Singer is quietly sweeping that awful movie under the rug?

Having Peter play Bolivar Trask would be a brilliant move,
especially with the Sentinels being a focus in this film. I can’t wait to see
how they write his story and motivation, and in the meantime, I will be
refreshing on the details from the other movies using Blockbuster @Home from
DISH. It’s so easy to go online and update my cue, and I love having such a
huge selection to choose from. There’s nothing better than coming home after my
work shift at DISH, and finding a new movie waiting in the mail. I also really
like that I can spend my train home entertained, because I can stream movies
right to my tablet. Refreshing on the movies is essential for Days, and I am
excited that with a villain cast, things are starting to come together.
