Real life couple Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly have joined Creation, a Jon Amiel project about the life of Charles Darwin. Bettany will play the father of evolutionary theory, and Connelly will play his wife (and cousin) Emma Wedgwood.
From THR:
“John Collee’s compelling script tells the remarkable story behind Darwin’s revolutionary theory and the foundation of a book that changed the world,” said Oscar-winning producer Jeremy Thomas, the force behind the project. “We think of Darwin as an old man with a gray beard. The reality of our story is very different.”
The film will focus on Darwin’s struggles between his deeply religious wife and his own growing belief in a world where God has no place. Two of Darwin’s children died before they reached their teenage years, which drove him to question religion and he eventually proposed that all species of life have evolved over time through the process of natural selection.
Evolution is a hot topic in society today, so I wouldn’t be surprised if this film causes a stir of the The Da Vinci Code kind. Filming starts at the end of September on location in England.
