Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen back for Days of Future Past

Bryan Singer has confirmed on his Twitter account that Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen will return to the X-Men franchise for X-Men: Days of Future Past. The director also confirmed James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, and Nicholas Hoult will be back, but that was expected.

The return of cast members from the original trilogy has been hinted at for some time, and for fans it was just a matter of waiting for some official confirmation. Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen back as Xavier and Magneto was a likely possibility, so it’ll be interesting to see who else from the original trilogy returns.

The Days of Future Past comic storyline alternates between present day, in which the X-Men fight Mystique’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and a future timeline caused by the X-Men’s failure to prevent the Brotherhood from assassinating Senator Robert Kelly. In this future universe, Sentinels rule the United States, and mutants live in internment camps.

Filming is expected to begin in April 2013 for a July 2014 release.
