Paramount secures rights to The Wolf of Wall Street

leonardo dicaprio wolf of wall street Image Martin Scorsese’s next drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio has found a domestic distributor in Paramount Pictures. The film is currently shooting in New York City and is set to be released in time for awards season 2013.

The Wolf of Wall Street stars Matthew McConaughey and Jonah Hill, and marks the fifth collaboration between Scorsese and DiCaprio. The film is based on the bestselling memoirs of the same name by Jordan Belfort, which chronicle his time as a New York stockbroker and white collar criminal.

The movie will be a strong contender for Paramount at the Oscars next year. Scorsese has previously had seven of his films nominated for best picture at the Academy Awards, including three starring DiCaprio. Their collaboration The Departed remains Scorsese’s lone win in both best picture and best director categories.

DiCapro is still shockingly still looking for his first Oscar, whether 2013 will be his year is anybody’s guess. With The Great Gatsby pushed back to 2013 Leo will have two major films out that year, however that may actually hurt his odds. Unlike the Golden Globes, an actor can’t be nominated twice in the same category in the same year. Many have asserted that DiCaprio may have won Oscar gold if he had been nominated for The Departed back in ’06. Instead Leo got the nod for Blood Diamond and went home empty-handed.

Either way Paramount is sure to pick up a lot of Oscar nominations with The Wolf of Wall Street. Scorsese’s last film Hugo, his first without DiCaprio since 1999, still managed to grab 11 nominations, and was considered by many (including myself) to be the year’s best film.
