john carter new trailer aliens The Super Bowl TV spot for Disney’s John Carter offers little in new footage, but it is probably the most ‘epic’ trailer we’ve seen to date. Reaction to the marketing so far has been mixed, but i’m still holding out to see what the director of WALL·E and Finding Nemo has put together.

Chronicle Filmonic

Chronicle is the latest movie to use the found footage style, blending it with the superhero subgenre to mixed results. Because we’re so familiar with the limitations of the camera in films like this, when the movie breaks that mold – and it does this fairly often – it makes those sequences seem incredibly impressive. But ultimately Chronicle fails to achieve anything more than a few successful tricks here and there; it’s passable entertainment, sure, but if you’re buying into the hype surrounding the film, I’d encourage you to lower your expectations.

Margaret Filmonic

Shot between 2004 and 2006, Margaret was acquired by Fox Searchlight and set for a 2007 release. Writer/director Kenneth Lonergan toiled for years in the editing room, causing lawsuits and all kinds of other drama over the missed release date. Eventually, Martin Scorsese and his longtime editor Thelma Shoonmaker were able to trim the movie down to the studio-mandated two and a half hour run time, but Lonergan wanted a three hour cut and still claims this finished version isn’t his true vision for the film. Finally dumped unceremoniously for a one-week run in theaters in 2011, Margaret is being revived for a brief run at the Cinefamily Theater in Los Angeles this week, and I couldn’t resist seeing what all the fuss was about. continue reading »

Chastain Edgerton

Hollywood up-and-comers Joel Edgerton (Warrior, The Great Gatsby) and Jessica Chastain (The Help, Tree of Life) have joined an unorthodox project. They’ll play a married couple in two films: The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: His, and The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Hers, each told from one character’s perspective. continue reading »

Back to the Future Filmonic

Deadline is hearing whispers that director Robert Zemeckis is in “early talks” with co-writer Bob Gale and composer Alan Silvestri to adapt their 1985 film Back to the Future for the stage. No further details have been revealed, but it’s surprisingly easy to imagine the classic time travel film as a musical. With some solid production design and a great cast, this could be something special. My only fear is that it becomes a phenomenon, and that studios take it as a sign that it’s time to capitalize on the franchise’s new-found popularity by going ahead with the long-rumored remake. (Shudder.)
