Bryan Singer has revealed on Twitter that French actor and comedian Omar Sy is the latest addition to X-Men: Days of Future Past. Sy will be the second actor who’ll be new to the franchise following the casting of Peter Dinklage last month. All the other actors confirmed have appeared in previous X-Men films, but it’ll be good to see some new faces among the mix.
Omar Sy is best known for his role in The Intouchables which was hugely popular across Europe and made over $400 million worldwide. Sy’s role as a caretaker to a wealthy quadriplegic aristocrat earned him the best actor prize at the Césars (France’s equivalent of the Oscars), which was even more impressive considering he was mostly known for his comedy work and The Intouchables was his first leading role

Singer hasn’t revealed who Sy will be playing, but some have speculated that it could be Bishop, a mutant whose ability enables him to absorb all forms of radiant or conductive energy that are directed towards him and release it as blasts of biokinetic energy. Bishop featured in the X-Men animated series when they adapted the Days of Future Past storyline, and took over the time-travelling role played by Kitty Pryde in the comics. We don’t know how the time travel will play out in the film, but there could still be room for Bishop.
The Days of Future Past comic storyline alternates between present day, in which the X-Men fight the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and a future timeline caused by the X-Men’s failure to prevent the Brotherhood from assassinating Senator Robert Kelly. In this future universe, Sentinels rule the United States, and mutants live in internment camps.
James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, and Nicholas Hoult are all set to reprise their roles, along with Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Ellen Page, Anna Paquin, and Shawn Ashmore. Filming will begin in April for a July 2014 release.
