Following the departure of Paul Greengrass from the fourth Bourne film Matt Damon said he wouldn’t continue without Greengrass, and in February the actor said “there’ll probably be a prequel of some kind with another actor and another director before we do another one.”
It was recently revealed that Tony Gilroy would direct the fourth Bourne film, titled The Bourne Legacy, which wouldn’t require Damon as it would focus on a “whole new hero, a whole new chapter”. Damon has commented for the first time on the new Bourne project, and he doesn’t seem happy with the lack of contact from Universal.
“I found out they’re making another when somebody saw it on the Internet. Nobody bothered to call me. I’m not in it, but even so, they’ll work Bourne into the title I guess. Universal just wants to call everything the Bourne something. So I guess they are trying to make another franchise and as they say, ‘It isn’t over until it’s over.'”
I wouldn’t say Damon has an ego but I don’t think any actor likes to think they are easily replaceable, especially if they have lead a franchise from the beginning.
No word yet on who will be the new face of the Bourne franchise, but with Universal aiming for a 2012 release we will start hearing things over the next few months.
