20th Century Fox has released a new trailer for the thriller Runner Runner starring Justin Timberlake, Gemma Arterton, Anthony Mackie, and Ben Affleck. Affleck as the villain is an inspired choice and not a role that he plays often, even though he’s quite good at it. His character in this film seems somewhat similar to the cunning investment broker he played in Boiler Room, only if his character in Boiler Room killed people.
Here’s the newest trailer:
Princeton grad student Richie (Timberlake), believing he’s been swindled, travels to Costa Rica to confront online gambling tycoon Ivan Block (Affleck). Richie is seduced by Block’s promise of immense wealth, until he learns the disturbing truth about his benefactor. When the FBI tries to coerce Richie to help bring down Block, Richie faces his biggest gamble ever: attempting to outmaneuver the two forces closing in on him.
This looks like the type of early fall thriller that should be pretty decent while you’re watching it, but ultimately forgettable. Sort of like the Timberlake sci-fi/thriller In Time, which was released the same month in 2011. I remember liking it but I don’t remember a whole lot about it.
Runner Runner is directed by Brad Furman (The Lincoln Lawyer) from a script by Brian Koppelman and David Levien (Rounders, Ocean’s Thirteen). The film is set for release on October 4th.
