The momentum surrounding G.I. Joe: Retaliation is finally picking up steam with a new trailer arriving online. Usually big delays for a movie would create extremely bad buzz, especially after the poor reception of the first film, however this time it seems like it could be a very wise move.
Most of the original characters from the original were either re-cast or written out, to make way for superstars like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Bruce Willis, and rumours were also rife that star Channing Tatum’s character, Duke, would be killed early in the movie. Then, in the first quarter of 2012 Tatum became a superstar with two $100 million movies (21 Jump Street and The Vow) and a third arrived later in the year (Magic Mike). Suddenly a G.I. Joe movie that didn’t capitalise on Tatum’s newfound star-power was inconceivable.
These trailers indicate that this sequel will be darker and grittier, replacing the childish humour of the original, with a more adult-orientated theme. However, with just two-and-a-half months until it’s release, there is a danger that the marketing push will come too little and too late for this movie to win back the fans and gain any serious traction among wider demographics.
