After replacing Foxcatcher at the AFI fest, it appears that the revenge thriller Out of The Furnace could be a dark horse in the Oscar race. A new trailer released today focuses on the more emotional side of the story with a cover of Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold”. Scott Cooper’s first film, Crazy Heart came out of nowhere to snag a few Academy Awards late in the game and it appears that his follow-up is looking to repeat those results.
Set in the heart of the rust belt, Out of The Furnace boasts an all-star cast of Oscar nominees Christian Bale, Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson, Forest Whitaker, Willem Dafoe and Sam Shepard (along with the talented Zoe Saldana). Originally a project for Leonardo Dicaprio and Ridley Scott, the story follows Russell Baze (Bale)– a blue-collar steel worker who takes justice into his own hands after the disappearance of his veteran brother (Affleck). His hunt for revenge leads him to a ruthless gang leader in the backwoods (Harrelson), who threatens to take everything from him.

Out of The Furnace will have a wide release on December 6th. Christian Bale can be seen again two weeks later in American Hustle.
