So, 5 movies opening wide this weekend, lots of ground to cover and I better get to the point fast.
It’s either Piranha 3D or The Expendables that wins the weekend, my money is on Sly and his crazy gang making something like $16 million compared to $14-$15 million that I expect from the extremely bloody Piranha 3D. The Expendables will probably finish with $90 to $100 million in North America and with the sequel already in the works, good times are coming back for old school action fans.
In 3rd place we should have that Julia Roberts romantic comedy that managed a good opening last week and should make $12-$13 million over the weekend. Eat Pray Love, while nowhere near Julia’s best, is doing decent business.
In 4th and 5th place we will have Vampires Suck (that already made 6.3 million since Wednesday) and The Other Guys battling out. Both should finish around $10 million or so, who wins is anyone’s guess.
In 6th place Nanny McPhee Returns with a likely $9 million while Lottery Ticket and The Switch should both make $7 to $8 million.
Finally, in 9th and 10th place we might have Inception and Scott Pilgrim Versus the World with $6.5 million and $5 million. Inception will pass $260 million in North America on Sunday and might finish with $290 or even $300 million before all is said and done.
Clearly this weekend is a dumping ground for studios and while we have many movies, none will wow us in any way.
I’m fighting a cold in the summer (yes, I know) and I feel awful so I really need to get in bed, that’s why I kept this a little shorter then usual, plus there was a lot to cover. Hopefully I will get a preview of what is to come in the last part of the year over the weekend if I start to feel better.
