IGN has posted the first teaser for Gareth Edwards’s surprise SXSW 2010 hit Monsters. Following the exploits of a journalist in the midst of an “infected zone,” it received some great reviews at the festival, and will be coming to cinemas around Halloween.
I applaud the teaser for not showing us what the “monsters” look like, and for not ruining everything (I love trailers that manage to get you excited without revealing much at all, examples being Inception and District 9). It looks very cool, but is otherwise another quick-cutting action trailer, and seems to contain elements of D9 and War of the Worlds. A clip from the film revealed back in March was much more atmospheric, and potentially gave us a better idea of the sort of tension present in Monsters:
The film was directed by British newcomer Gareth Edwards, who apparently designed all of the special effects by himself, on his computer. That’s some feat, and hopefully will gain the man some more recognition, like Neill Blomkamp. And also of course, studios will be loving this new wave of lower-budget, large-scale science fiction.
Possibly another (partly) unexpected triumph like last year’s District 9, Monsters can be added to the reasonably long list of horror / thrillers being released round Halloween time. It hits on 29th October in the US, and 12th November in the UK.
